In this basic personal essay writing
course, students learn how to: gather information to prepare a first draft,
include universal truths that broaden the lessons they've learned, revise
and polish essays for others to read, add authenticity to their stories
with the use of details, and come up with their own topics.
Each week participants will select one
topic from a list of several and write a personal essay, which they will
email to the instructor, who will provide a general critique. Beginning
topics will allow participants to write on lighthearted themes. Successive
topics will dig deeper into issues that require more emotional honesty.
Although writing our stories frees up
buried emotions and thoughts, giving rise to revelations about how we have
lived our lives, this is not a psychotherapy group. It is intended to be a
course for people who want to write and reflect on stories from their
lives.
This course offers the opportunity to
record and pass down our personal histories to future generations. This
course is for any adult, regardless of age or writing experience, who wants
to explore writing as a medium for recording life's journey, and who wants
some instruction on writing a personal essay.

writing was perfectly clear, but there is LOTS of room for improvement. One
of the assignments actually helped me make a personal decision in my life,
such a surprise!” ~ Rose Anne
"I liked the
discipline demanded by weekly assignments. I also learned quite a bit about
how to use my computer through this class." ~ Janet
“I liked Margie’s way of
teaching. She makes you think for yourself and answers questions with
clear, concise words. She gives unbiased opinions of your work. This is a
great course for evoking personal memories and true to life stories which
pertain to your life today.” ~ Peg
"Margie did an
excellent job. It wasn't until I took another course that I realized what
an excellent teacher she really was especially compared to the instructor
in my other course." Diana
"I liked the challenge
of a weekly writing assignment and the opportunity to write personal
stories. The instructor knew exactly what she was doing. The course was
well planned and on target." ~ Louise
“I thought the
"lectures" were right on point. The topics Margie selected and
suggestions she made were timely and very practical. The writing
assignments were very stimulating and challenging. I liked having a choice
of topics.” ~ Barbara
“I think that one or more
of the essays I submitted in this course may make good entries to a
Memoirs/Personal Essays competition. I have started revising them as Margie
suggested, and will submit them. I appreciate the critiques and the idea of
writing the essays in the first place.” ~ Ralph
