Writing about one's experience
with serious illness, such as cancer, improves the immune function. I learned
about the groundbreaking studies linking writing with health while conducting
research for my book, The Healing Way, A Journal for Cancer Survivors
(Element Books, 2000).
Even if writing didn't improve physical health, people with cancer still
would have many reasons to write about their experience. Writing is a
creative activity that helps you organize your thoughts and give expression
to your emotions. Writing helps you sort out who you are, how you have
changed, who you are becoming. Writing provides the opportunity for insights
and revelations about events and relationships to rise to the surface of your
consciousness. Writing is a more constructive pastime than obsessing in your
mind.
A four-week (two hours each session) Writing About Cancer course and
a 2.5-hour Writing About Cancer workshop are available for licensing
to individuals or facilities. Email margie@writingtoheal.com
