VI (generation)
VELLA BELL CARNEY, my mother was born 1/25/1901 in Liberty, WV. Putnam Co. She lived there with her parents and siblings, till about 1916 when the family moved to Charleston, WV. Her parents were WILLIAM FRANKLIN CARNEY and Luzania Alice WOODALL. Vella had five brothers and two sisters, and one half sister and brother. They were all born at Liberty, except the last child, Ruth, born in Charleston.

Vella married JOE W. DERRICK 8/26/1926 in Charleston, Kanawha County. His parents were Elmore Marion Derrick and Nancy Ellen HACKNEY. They had only one child, that was me, Marieda born in 1930.

V (generation)
WILLIAM FRANKLIN CARNEY Vella's father was born near Liberty on Frog's Creek, in Kanawha County, the line is very near Liberty. He was born 3/21/1863 and died 5/10/1943 in Charleston WV. He had a merchandise store in Liberty while living there, which still is in business today, and has been owned and ran by the Ranson family, since the family moved about 1916. The Ransons, are descendants of William's sister Margaret who married William A. Ranson.

William "Billy" was married three times, his first wife was Ellen M. MEEKS, b-1867 and died between 1884 and 1888, there were no children from this marriage. His second marriage was to Nancy Emeline Sidney MELTON born 12/31/1869 and died 5/26/1893. They married 5/31/1888 in Putnam Co. and had two children:

1. Henry Ivan 1889-1968 m- 1911 Putnam Co. to Nellie "Maud" Katherin GOWER (no children)
2. Icy Mae 1893-1961 m-1909 Putnam Co. to Omer T. Rawlings.

Billy's third marriage was to my Grandmother, Luzania Alice WOODALL, she was born 5/21/1874 in Jackson Co. WV and died 1/11/1933 in Charleston, Kanawha County. She was the daughter of WILLIAM WASHINGTON WOODALL Woodall and Sarah Elizabeth FRENCH.

SILAS CARNEY 1821 Mason Co. W(VA) died 6/3/1898 near Liberty WV. was the father of "Billy". He married Lucinda Margaret FISHER 5/1843 in Kanawha County. She was the daughter of John Fisher & Lucretia HARRISON.

III (generation)
WILLIAM CARNEY 1794 - 4/17/1873 the father of Silas, was born in the Harrison/Randolph Co. W(VA) area near Buckhannon W(VA). His parents moved near Ripley, WV about 1811. William served in the War of 1812 as a private for three months, substituting for Elijha Staats, under the command of Lieutenant Sears and then Matthew McCown.

William married 4/10/1813 in Mason Co. W(VA) to Sarah Margaret BONNETT in the home of her parents William Bonnett and Barbara HARPOLD. Sarah Margaret was born ab 1796 Harrison Co. and died ab 1890 in Kanawha County near Liberty WV. They had eight children:

1. Rhoda 1816 never married but had three children.
2. Emeline 1821 -1884 m-1845 to Josiah C. Thomas
3. Silas 1821-1898 m-1843 Lucinda M. FISHER
4. Andrew Jackson 1825 -1901 m-1847 Melissa ROLLINS.
5. Mary Jane 1827-1900-1910 m-1848 Francis W. Mathews
6. Joseph 1828-1891 m-1847 to Mary Ann ROLLINS
7. Elizabeth 1837-1909 m-1858 Henry Monday
8. Louisa 1839 -1912 m-1856 Elihue Miller

The family lived near Ripley, then moved to Kanawha "Poca Dist" about 1844. William died 4/17/1873 and was buried in his daughter's , Matthew's Family Cemetery on Second Ck. Margaret died at the home of her son Silas, and was first buried at Pitchford Cemetery, then later was moved to the Matthews Cemetery to be with William. There is a marker there for William but not Margaret.

II (generation)
THOMAS CARNEY father of William was b-10/15/1769 on the South Branch of the Potomac, most likley Ceder Creek in Hampshire Co. VA. He is later listed as one of the pupils in a primitave log cabin school house at the mouth of Radcliff's Run, present Upshur Co. WV. The teacher was a Mr. Haddox.

Thomas was a scout for Randolph County for eight years. He was later called into service in 1792 by Governor Henry Lee. He served 173 days, discharged Dec. 1, 1792. A revolution Pension Claim was refused, because of his inability to prove that he was old enough for such service.

Thomas married Mary "Polly" PARSONS 1/3/1788. She was born 1773, daughter of Charles and Elizabeth CHESTNUT Parsons. In 1800 deed record of Randolph County shows Thomas buying 400 acres on both sides of Stony Run in June 1800 from Mesiah? Saxton & Hannah of Frederick Co. VA. This was on a branch of the Buckanon River. Thomas later in Oct. 1805 in Randolph Co. bought 60 acres from Henry Jackson and wife Mary, adjoining William Casto, part of 1,000 acres that Henry obtained in 1801. Thomas shows in the 1810 Harrison Co. Census and then in 1820 in Mason Co. W(VA) census. In 1819 he granted land to son Jessie on the East Side of Mill Creek, Mason County then. Thomas bought property in Wood Co. September 1830, he shows in the 1830 Census there, then sold his property in 1834, (about 2miles from the Little Kanawha River.)

The next census Thomas shows in is the 1840 Jackson Co. W(VA) He died 10/19/1846 and Mary 12/4/1863 Jackson Co. WV They are buried in the Mt.Calvary Cemetery, (previously called the Harpold Cemetery, Mill Ck. near Ripley WV.

I (generation)
JOHN CARNEY was Thomas's father, he was born about 1730? Prince William Co. VA. and died after 1811 Mason Co. W(VA). There is no information concerning his wife.
