About Jadzia Cattery and Emony's Exotic Cats Sole Proprietor of Jadzia Cattery, and President of Emony's Exotic Cats: David B. Busch, Ph.D., M.D. (employed in Washington D.C. as a Radiation Pathologist). He recently completed a one day course and passed an examination on "Basic Husbandry of Exotic Felines" conducted by The LIOC Endangered Species Conservation Federation, Inc. He has lived with Norwegian forest cats (currently 11) since April, 1998 and with lynxes (currently two) since June, 1999. Our two cat organizations: The Norwegian forest cats are handled under Jadzia Cattery, which is a sole proprietorship for breeding and sale of Norwegian forest cats. Emony's Exotic Cats handles the Canadian lynxes, which formerly were with Jadzia Cattery. Emony's Exotic Cats is in the process of being set up as a 501(3)c nonprofit private organization devoted to exhibiting exotic cats to the public. So far this educational work has included two exchibitings of Tobin in local school parking areas; and initial setup of a "Lynxcam" to show the lynxes live in time lapse and eventually video stream. Jadzia Cattery and Emony's Exotic Cats are located in south central Pennsylvania near Gettysburg, about 50-70 miles from Harrisburg, Baltimore, and D.C. The Cattery has been registered with CFA and TICA. WHAT CATS DO WE HAVE? We have Norwegian forest cats (Norsk Skogkatt), or "wegies" (WEE-gees), which are rare pedigreed domestic cats resembling long tailed miniature lynxes. They are descended from Norwegian feral cats (domestic cats living outdoors away from people as wild cats) that lived in the Norwegian woods for centuries. Wegies evolved to be well adapted to life in the wild in a cold, wet climate, with water repellant and oily coats that are long in the winter. They are superb tree climbers capable of rapidly climbing down trees head first, and also have been praised for their hunting skills, intelligence, and courage. They make excellent pets. Wegies are much rarer in the US than the very similar, larger Maine coon cats but are common house pets in northern Europe. The breed was founded when a panel of judges determined a standard for the breed and then agreed to consider an original population of founder cats to conform acceptably to their standard.
We also have a pair of Canadian lynxes, housed separately from the wegies and expected to be bred in 2001 or 2002. These are exotic (zoo) cats weighing around 30-40 pounds full grown. In the wild, they mostly live in Canada and prefer to eat rabbits. They recently were classified as a threatened species because although they are in no danger of disappearing in Canada, relatively few are left in the US. We have no lynx kittens at this time but hope to have our first lynx litter in early 2002; we now have all required permits (USDA+PA) to breed and sell lynxes. We also are looking into getting a pair of rare housecat sized exotic cats (requiring US Department of the Interior approval) around the year 2003; these are likely to be Pallas' cats.
Our breeder cats. These include a male wegie, four female wegies, and a pair of lynxes. Two of our breeder cats, Jadzia and Kurzon, are the first wegies to get married. We do NOT breed hybrid cats-wegies are bred only with wegies, and our lynxes will be bred only with each other.
Cats and kittens (all wegies) for sale! This currently includes a pair of black and white neuters born November 30, 1999; a blue or blue classic tabby spay and a brown classic tabby neuter born April 7, 2000; and a blue and white neuter and a blue or blue classic tabby with white spay born September 14, 2000. Another litter of at least two kittens is expected in early February, 2001.
Feline DNA testing We found this helpful during a question of cat identification. We hope that within a few years it will become standard practice for breeder cats to have DNA fingerprints on file, and that DNA test results will be provided with cat pedigrees. FINANCIAL AND BUSINESS DOCUMENTATION. This new cattery (place for breeding cats for sale of kittens) was given an EIN (Employer Identification Number, the business organization equivalent of a social security number) by Department of Treasury, Internal Revenue Service on 23 December, 1998 (confirmed 31 December) with principal activity listed as "Cattery (breed domestic cats)." Following our May 1999 move to Pennsylvania, the fictitious name (business name, trade name) Jadzia Cattery also was granted by PA Dept. of State, with the business described as "Breeding and sale of domestic and exotic cats." PERMITS. We have USDA and PA permits that make it possible for us to exhibit, buy, sell, and breed Canadian lynxes.
CAT HEALTH: Jadzia, Kurzon, Stripy, and Lela (Ezri's test is pending) have been tested and proved to not be carriers of glycogen storage disease type IV (GSDIV)(which can cause slow death in occasional wegie kittens from breedings of cats carrying the disease. All five breeder wegies and both lynxes are free of the deadly cat viruses FLV and FIV. We also just had studies of our breeder wegies for polycystic kidney disease and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Dietary information Why our house cats eat lynx food.
