The horrors of the 2004 election (see my "Pink" post election rant)have been followed by the joy of the election of 2006 (see my blog from election night in Iowa) I am VERY buzzed about the busy 2007-08 tour of my show "Us" and my new book & performance "1001 BEDS". I finally come out as a big musical show queen! Us ricochets between my love affair since childhood with Broadway musicals crosscut to an exploration of home, exile and the injustices lesbian and gay couples face in the good ol' USA. "Us" is a funny, sassy and pissed-off exploration of these most American contradictions as the piece careens from memories of a ten year old's plan to flee to Canada to escape the war in Viet Nam (“Man of La Mancha”) , to a meditation on why a Southern California child spoke in an English accent (Oliver!”), to a surreal tug-of-war at the edge of America as the Niagara Falls rushes between my legs (Don’t Rain on My Parade”!)
Denied all the rights of marriage – including immigration rights for their foreign partners -- that only straight Americans enjoy, my Australian-Scottish partner of nine years Alistair and I face the grim certainty that they will be forced to leave the United States in the near future in order to maintain our relationship.
Teetering here on the edge of exile, it has been really fun to do this exploration of how musicals informed my queer identity and politics as we grow up. But then, I was once an 8 year old boy who did stripteases for his brother with GYPSY on the record player!
I'm also very excited about my book that's just come out. It's called 1001 BEDS and is a collection of my essays and performances published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. Tons of fotos. 1001 BEDS won the 2007 award as Best Book in Drama-Theater from the Lambda Literary Foundation.
