These women were true heroines, who like the 400 others featured in the dictionary, fought for justice and human rights.
Alice Peurala was an Armenian American labor leader, organizer, and civil rights activist. During the 50’s, she was a young single mother who worked the swing shift for United States Steel to support her daughter. When she was passed up for a promotion, she legally fought for it on the grounds of sex discrimination and won. In 1979, she became the first woman in the nation to head a basic steel unit, the United Steelworkers Local 65.
Sylvia Woods, who appeared in the film Union Maids, was a pioneer in the African American liberation and labor movements. During WWII, she worked for Bendix Aviation and led a union organizing drive. In the 40’s, she helped organize the United Auto Workers (UAW) Local 330, where in 1946, she helped draft a resolution that the UAW take a stand against sex discrimination. Later she was elected secretary-treasurer of the local for a two-year term. After the war, Woods worked to assist laid off women. In l970 she took up the cause of Angela Davis and later helped found the National Alliance Against Racism.
We are proud to present these women stepping out of the pages of history to tell their stories.
