Search Angel - Maryland
Search Angel - Maryland

My name is Kate and I am a reunited birth mom.  I found my daughter, Lindsey, in December of 1987, after 23 years of heartache and 11 months of searching without the benefit of the Internet.  My search was made more difficult since I live in Maryland and my search was centered in Colorado.  Searching for my first born child was a difficult journey, not only logistically, but emotionally. However, finding Lindsey and her children made up for all of the sorrows and fears I had encountered along the way.  Many years later, I must tell you that I have never regretted finding Lindsey and I will forever be grateful to those who helped me along the way.  It is for that reason that I have chosen to help others with their searches.  I am not a  search expert, but I am only doing what I can to try to help others find their families.  I believe in adoption reform .. NOW.  It is imperative that the adult adoptees of this country have the knowledge of who they are.  This is a basic right of all Americans, but our present laws do not allow the adult adoptees, as a whole, that right.  They are forbidden the knowledge of their ancestry and their biological roots in the name of confidentiality.  There is great controversy about who has requested and been granted this confidentiality.  I know, as a birth mother whose daughter was born in 1964, that I never requested nor was I ever promised confidentiality.  I know my daughter was never promised confidentiality.  Her parents, those who adopted and raised her, never requested nor were promised confidentiality.  So .. Why was she kept from knowing the truth of who she is - who she really is?

Since finding Lindsey, I have been asked to help others find their families and I have done this with some success over the years.  About a year ago, I joined the adoption searching community on the Internet and have met many wonderful and interesting searching and reunited adoption triad members.  As I said above, I am not an expert .. far from it .. but, I do enjoy helping these people and doing whatever I can to get them the answers they are looking for.  I have learned a lot about the status of adoption laws in our country and, even though some progress is being made, there is so much more that needs to be done.  I find it appalling that an adult of 50 years of age (just an example) is told that he cannot have his original birth certificate.  These searching adoptees are not disgruntled children looking for new families.  These are adults who are trying to put the missing pieces back into their lives.  They are productive, law abiding citizens that have a common desire and need to know who they are, not so unlike the rest of us -- the non-adopted.

All searchers should register with the International Soundex Reunion Registry.  This is the largest, free, off-line, matching registry.  Send a self-addressed stamped envelope to: ISRR, P.O. Box 2312, Carson City,  NV 89702

On 7/15/2000, members of the adoption triad will meet in Washington, DC to march and rally for open records.  March for Open Adoption Records http://members.aol.com/deitrahs/MAM.html

What is a Search Angel?
The Search Angels are people who have volunteered to help others with their adoption related searches.  We don't charge a fee for the work we do, however, sometimes it is necessary to ask for reimbursement for expenses we incur along the way.
