Sciacca Surnames:SABELLA
Comments: My maternal grandfather Guiseppi
SABELLA came from Sciacca. By contacting this web page I realized that SABELLA is a very common name in that region of Sicily. Grandpa Joe
came to New York probably in the early 1900's . My mother was born in 1908. He married Theresa LaRosa apparently from Genoa and a good
deal younger than he. They had three children, Josephine, Christopher and Paul. My Uncle Paul, who is now 89, just told us that Sciacca was the
family's birthplace.

Pietro Bivona in 1887 in Sciacca. They came to the United States in 1894,living in New York City for a few years; then Buffalo, , Dunkirk, Fredonia and finally Jamestown, NY. I have traced my family back to the late 1700's. I can't go back further unless I can get into the Church Records. Has anyone ever searched the church records in Sciacca from the 1700's?

Richard Cirami : rgrape@dove.net.au
Sciacca Surnames: GERALDI/GERARDI CATANZARO
Comments:My maternal grandfather, Antonino Geraldi, married Maria Catanzaro in Sciacca sometime during the early 1890's. They went to New York (the Bronx?). Maria was having miscarriages and went back to her mother's home in Sciacca 'to break the curse'. Their first daughter was born in 1899, in Sciacca.
Twelve more children were born in the US, but only 3 survived childhood.
My mother was born in San Francisco in 1904.
Antonino was a fisherman. Maria sometimes worked as a cook for a cousin in South San Francisco. One of Maria's sisters married a Maggio and had a son
Jimmy. (I think this was in New York.)
I can recall stories about New York, and I wonder whether the family moved back to New York after the San Francisco fire and earthquake of 1906. I can also recall hearing the name Maniscalco, but can't recall who it belonged to. Somewhere along the line, probably in the US, the family name changed to Gerardi.
*****************************************************************
Lindo St. Angel:lindo@worldnet.att.net
Sciacca surnames: SANTANGELO
Comments: I believe that my great-great-great grandfather, Biagio Santangelo was born in Sciacca around 1800. His son , Gaspare(b1821) moved to nearby Sambuca di Sicilia after Gaspare's marriage to Concetta Mangiaracina who lived there.
I'd appreciate any information you can share with me on the Santangelo line in Sciacca.
I know its a popular name there, but I've not been able to find a record of Biagio's birth. I did some research in Sciacca last year.
****************************************************************
E.Jetter: EJetter@aol.com
Sciacca Surnames: BACCHI, SALADINO
Comments:I am descended from a Giaocchino Bacchi on my grandfather's side and a Maria Saladino on my grandmother's side. My great-grandfather was Rosario Bacchi from Sciacca. Giaocchino was born in 1881 and emigrated to the US in 1897 at age 16 to Norristown, PA and Maria was born around 1891 and probably came here about 1897 also and she too went to Norristown. Giaocchino was Rosario's first born so it is likely that his father was also named Giaocchino following the Sicilian tradition of naming the first born son after his own father.
I would assume that Rosario was probably born sometime between 1855 and 1860.

 | Sciacca Promenade c 1996-Frank and Brenda Powers |
Sciacca, Sicily , Provincia di Agrigento, Sicilia
Sciacca is an agricultural center producing cereals, wine, olive oil , macaroni, and citrus fruit. It lies along the South Coast which is not as green, as scenic or as populated as the other coasts. Sciacca was an important royal town in the Middle Ages. It has town walls built circa1330,ruins of castles, two palaces, and several churches, one the cathedral of St. Margherita that was built in 1342.
Sciacca's origin has been traced as far back as 628 BC. The mythical founder of the city is said to have been Kokalos, King of the Sicani. It is one of the most ancient thermal resorts on the Mediterranean. It was known in "Siceliot" times for its sweating caves (located in Mount Kronio, below St.Calogero's sanctuary, where handmade pre-historic objects have beenfound) and for its thermal waters.
The Romans gave it the name "Thermae Siluntinae" or "Aquae Larodae," and the arabs called it "as-Shaqqah", hence the current name Sciacca evolved by combining Shaqqah and Aquae. It was
popular as a spa with both the Greeks and the Romans. Ancient Greek Temples are but a short drive east or west , with the most well preserved outside of Greece, located in Agrigento about a 30-40 minute drive along the coast
During the middle ages, Sciacca, already famous for its natural resources, was the seat of powerful noble families who rendered it an impregnable fortress. Parts of the walled city can still be seen today.
From 1400 to 1529 it was the stage of a real civil war, which brought it sad fame. It was called the Casa Sciacca, in which the Perollo family and the Luna family were fierce rivals for over a century. Insults, murders and suicides took place with such regularity and rapidity as to thrust it into chaos, fear and bloodshed the entire citizenry who were divided between the two factions. The end of the feud exemplified the violence. Giacomo Perollo was killed and dragged around the city tied to a horse's tail, while his rival, Sigismondo Luna, fled to Rome, where the horror of his crime never left him until he committed suicid by jumping into the Tiber River. The feud left the town devastated and decreased its population by half.
Today it’s quiet again, an unpretentious, unspoiled fishing town on a hillside sloping up from the sea. The old town is made up of quarters surrounding the half dozens centuries old churches that are the centerpiece of the each Piazza. Steps from the old town lead down to the Madrice section, the port area where many of our grandparents lived. Many of the narrow streets in this section were named after Saints, the "strada San Lorenzo' and strada San Giuseppe' are two.
Sciacca is noted as a center for thermal cures. The sulfur water which rises naturally is used for mud-cures, baths and inhalations, the conditions treated varying from arthritis to skin diseases and respiratory ailments. The sanctuary or Basilica di San Calogero, located on Monte Kronio, about 7 kilometers outside of Sciacca proper dates back to the 16th Century, and is Baroque in style. According to local legend, the Bascilica was built in honor of a hermit (Calogero - a handsome old man), who came from far off Constantinople to live and dedicate himself to prayer and meditation. He isolated himself in the caverns beneath the mountain (they can be visited today). To this day stories abound about his miracles and good works which contributed to his being made a Saint, and a patron saint of Sciacca.
Five miles north-east of Sciacca is the isolated Monte St. Calogero noted for its grottoes famous for hot steam baths accessible from the Hotel delle Stufe situated below the Sanctuary of St. Calogero.
Sciacca - Population (1936 census) 17,265. As an indicator of growth, its population is 38,256 as of the 1991 census.
