Joel Griffis was Captain of the militia in the 719th district, Ware County, 1835-1840. He served a short volunteer term of enlistment in Captain Levi J. Knight;s independent company of Lowndes County militia in 1838.
His widow was baptized into Prospect Primitive Baptist Church, in Clinch County, Aug. 22. 1872, and was dismissed by letter Feb. 10, 1877. She died at a advance age in about 1895.

John Griffis served as a private in the Indian War under Captain David Johnson's Company of Ware County Militia, Nov. 1 to Dec 31, 1839.
John Griffis migrated to Florida from Georgia in search of better pasture land for his large herd of cattle and hogs. John moved to the northwestern section of what was later Bradford County. There were only two other families living in the area at that time. They settled near New River. Robert James Robinson

Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia, sates in 1831, John Stalvey, Jr and family moved back to Georgia and settled in Ware County in the 12th land district and in the portion made into Clinch County County in 1850. The 1850 census shows John Stalvey, Jr with no wife. Abt 1843 or 1844, Mrs Easter Padgett Stalvey eloped with John Griffis to Florida, taking with her only the daughter, Rebecca. About 1856-57, Mr. Stalvey with all his children except Rebecca and Mrs Mrs. Chancy, moved to Louisiana, locating there in Rapides Parish. At the time of removal, the son John was married, also the daughter Mar and teh son Benjamin. John and his wife movedto Louisiana as did Isaac and Mary Thornton, but Benjamin's wife did not go. Notes for RICHARD D GRIFFIS:
Richard Griffis enlisted in the Confederate Army and near the end of the war, he deserted and returned home. He hid out in the Hammock with other relatives. He married his cousin, Rhoda Starling there in the woods after sending for a preacher.
In the 1870 census Richard and Rhoda lived next door to Abraham and Nancy Starling. Richard
owned about 40 acres in Lawtey, Florida near the old Evergreen Church which he farmed. He grew corn, peanuts, sweet potatoes and cotton. He had a long white beard when he died. He once told his grandson, Levin, son of Joe, that he had only cut it one time.
Richard was a quite man and well liked by everyone.
Rhoda was a very small woman and was humped over in her later years. Her granchildren remember her setting in the kitchen door smoking a pipe with her finger crooked over it.
Willie and Laura Griffis purchased the old home place and built a new home there.

JoAnn Norman Fowler sent me a copy of her family and it does show Richard & Rachel Eliza Cox with their children on there. One of their children is "Linda" same birth day and some of the same children as shown on the 1880 Gaineyville, Charlton County, Georgia Census.
I KNOW that the same names were used all the time by other families as well. That is why it is so easy to get the families mixed up.
But this is the family I am going with UNTIL someone proves JoAnn and the Census records wrong.
There has been some speculation that Grandma Eliza could be a Minchew. That name (Eliza)
was repeated quite often in that family. So while the speculation is going on, I offer that she could have also been a GRIFFIS. Also repeated quite often in that family too.
I won't even speculate on how the Starling name came to be attached to Grandma. But I remember when anyone talked about her they always said Melinda Starling. I got the Linda from her so I do
know that much.
