Joseph Griffis, son of ???? Griffis and Mother unknown, born about 1723 in Germany??. He was married about 1743, in Orangeburg District, South Carolina to Margaret Hutto, daughter of Issac Hutto.

Children of Joseph and Margaret Hutto Griffis are:

Orangeburg District, South Carolina
iv. John, born 1754
v. Abraham, born 1757 in Orange burg District, South Carolina, christened
19 Jan 1758 in Orange burg District, South Carolina

The Griffis family was among a group of people for Germany and Holland that settled in Orangeburg District of South Carolina in 1735. Three of those people by the name Griffis came to South Georgia. Tradition has it that they were brothers but I have a problem with that, I think more likely that they were uncle and nephews, and that Charles was the brother of John. I find in the Lutheran Church records of two brothers by the name of Joseph and Peter Griffis, who appear to have married sisters by the name of Hutto, being daughters of Issac Hutto. The only or first John I can find was born in 1754 and baptized or christened 17 July 1754 in Orangeburg Distsrict of South Carolina, it is my belief that this is the John Griffis who married Barbara and had at least two sons, namely Samuel and John, may hve been others. This John was the son of Joseph Griffis who was born about 1723, I am still searching for the immigrant ancestor. Written by Mr. Robert J. Robinson, April 1996.

MINNIE GRIFFIS JAN 25 1883 SENT TO ME BY CLAIR J JORDAN

Descendants of Minnie Griffis
Generation No. 1
1. MINNIE6 GRIFFIS (SAMUEL5, BERRY BERRIAN4, SAMUEL B.3, JOHN2, JOSEPH1) was born 25 Jan 1883 in
Headlight Clinch County Georgia, and died in Headlight Clinch County Georgia. She married JOHN GRIFFIS.
Notes for MINNIE GRIFFIS:
Common Law Marriage
Eloise Jordan told Claire Jordan that Becky Griffis' father had left her property upon his death. In researching the
materials I found that Becky Griffis was an heir to John Griffis.
Also, Eloise Jordan and Avon L. Jordan told Claire Jordan that Minnie Griffis was through out of her house when
she was pregnant and her father gave her a parcial of land. Minnie Griffis cut rail road cross ties to support
herself and her children.
Notes for JOHN GRIFFIS:
Eloise Jordan, prior to her death, informed Claire Jordan that Betty Becky Griffis' father left her property (land
and cattle) upon his death.
In researching this information, Betty Becky Griffis was mentioned in the will of John Griffis (a cousin of Minnie
Griffis). However, no true marriage was record was found. Therefore, it is accepted that it was a common law
marriage.

Therefore, it is accepted that it was a common law
marriage.

Charles Griffis, a Revolutionary Soldier, was born in Orangeburg District, SC, in 1759 and was through to have
been a son of John and Barbara Griffis of Four Holds, Orangeburg County. John was killed in the Revolutionary
War. Due to the lost of the Orangeburg County records it is impossible to learn much about the Griffis
antecedents there. It is know that on account of the father's death Charles took his younger brother Samuel, who
was at the time hardly grown, and came to Georgia during the 1790s, where he married Mrs. Charity Rich, a
widow lady. She was born about 1770 and died in 1849. They that 9 children.
The first know record in Georgia of Charles Griffis appears to be a tax-digest of Montgomery County for the year
1806 at which time he was living in the 57th district and owned 200 acres of land. However, the census record of
the children show that all of them were born in Georgia.
He was living in Appling County in the 1820 Census. It was about 1821 - 1822 that he moved further south into
what was then Appling County on account of his large droves of cattle. He settled on Lot of Land 195, 7th
District (territory now in Atkinson County) and lived there about two years, after which he moved to Lot 247, 7th
District (territory now in Clinch County). He lived there about two years until his death in August, 1844. He and
his wife were buried in nearby Guest Millpond Cemetery where the John Floyd Chapter, D.A.R. placed a marker
over his grave in 1950. The Griffis homeplace was cut out of Appling into Ware County in 1825, and changed
out of Ware into Clinch in 1850.
Mr. Griffis served in one of the South Carolina regiments in the Continental Line. He was present at Cornwallis'
Surrender at Yorktown and in his last years, often recalled details of that memorable occasion. He was granted
land in Georgia in 1827 as a Revolutionary Soldier (see Knight's Roster of the Revolution, pp. 354 and 464).
Mrs. Eva Griffis Kirkland and several other ladies of Atkinson County, are members of the John Floyd Chapter,
D.A.R. as descendants of Charles Griffis, R.S.
Juniper Griffis was administrator of his father's estate, and was appointed in 1844 as such by the Inferior Court of
Ware County.
The 1790 Census of Orangeburg District, SC, (territory probably now in Barnwell County) shows Charles Griffis'
family to have consisted of self and two females, the latter thought to have been his mother and sister since he was
not married at the time.

Samuel Griffis was born in 1775 in Orangeburg District, S.C., and was a younger brother of Charles Griffis, R.S.

about 1830, and he married for his second wife Miss Mary (Pollie) Register, daughter of John Register, R.S. of
Bullock County. She was born in Sampson County, NC., in 1787, and died in Clinch County, Sept 18, 1889, age
102 years. She had no children. Mr. Griffis had 9 children by his first wife.
Samuel Griffis sometimes about 1819 moved to Appling County probably in connection with his brother and his
family, but he did not move on further into Appling about 1822-23 when his brother did, but remained in Appling
County until about 1833 when he moved to the 12th land district of Ware (territory now Clinch) County. He was
cut into the new county of Clinch out of Ware, in Feb 1850. He lived on Lot 484, 12th district, where his son,
Samuel, also lived and died. He was buried in a family burying-ground on the old home-place.
According to the Revolutionary War Military records for South Carolina, Samuel Griffis enlisted in New York
and served as a private.
in the 1850 Slave Schedules it is reported that Samuel Griffis was the owner of 2 male slaves aged 65 and 54 in
Ware County, Georgia.

Notes for JOHN GRIFFIS, JR.:
Pioneers of the Wiregrass Georgia - Folks Huxford.
John Griffis was born in Orangeburg District, SC about 1778-1780, and was a brother of Charles and Samuel
Griffis (VOL I). They were sons of John and Barbara Griffis. The elder Griffis lost his life in the Revolutionary
War. The three sons same to Georgia in the 1790s, and married in this state. John Griffis married Sarah,
daughter of Reubin Neel of Emanuel County. They had 5 children.
John Griffis lived in Bulloch and Montgomery counties, but in the formation of Emanuel County in 1812 appears
to have been cut into it. He was Justice of Inferior Court of Emanuel County from 1817 until May, 1821, when
the Executive Department records show he had removed from the county. He moved to Appling County where it
appears he was immediately elected to a vacancy on the Inferior Court bench of that newly-formed county. He
was commissioned Nov 12, 1821, to the Inferior Court of Appling, and served until early in 1824 when he died.
He apparently died in March, 1824. An appraisement of his estate in Appling County was made Sept 21, 1825,
by Abraham Eason, Samuel Griffis and Joel Griffis, appraisers, and a copy was sent to Emanuel County and
recorded. The Appling County estate records having been burned, this Emanuel County record is the only record
that can be found of his estate.
The widow returned to Emanuel County, and qualified as guardian for the above children, except Elizabeth, Feb.
6, 1826. She was appointed administrator Sept. 5, 1825 in Emanuel County.
