5.5 Meter Sailboat - US 82, RAMONA
RAMONA -- 5.5 Meter Sailboat US 82

HAVE YOU SEEN THIS BOAT??
The Ramona was my Grandfathers boat.  Ramona is a cold formed wood 5.5 meter sailboat, originally built for the 1968 Olympics right here in San Diego at the Driscolls boat yard.  The Ramona was originally consigned by a fellow who dabbled in some illegal illicit activities, which ultimately landed him in jail and found Ramona, not yet complete, and without an owner. My Grandfather Walter Trepte was walking through the yard and saw her blunt nose, and was intrigued. He ultimately purchased Ramona and enjoyed many years sailing her in San Diego bay as did I.

That is Grandpa at the tiller -- enjoying Ramona
This is me and Chris Waddell sailing back from the beer can races in San Diego.  We have the big chute up -- coming around the point at Point Loma, we easier would get knocked down with this sail up!

So where is Ramona, you ask?

Well, I would love to know the answer to that question too. There have been sightings in Santa Barbara, but, alas, I have been unable to locate her.  In the 70's Grandpa donated Ramona to the Sea Scouts, who then sold her to we do not know who.

If you have seen Ramona, or know where she may be, please email me! I would love to know if she is still afloat, and would love to swap old photos and stories for the new owners newer photos and stories! Email me if you have any ideas, or leads where she may be!

Thank you -

Below is an old article on the 5.5 meter Olympic trials. Somewhere out there is Ramona -- sailed by  Gerry Driscoll.  Soon thereafter, my Grandfather became the owner of the boat.
