Sawney Bean, the history!

Sawney bean...The bio! Sawney Bean is Arnt Rikardsen, guitarist extraordinare, Nancy Trudel, seamless rhythm guitar, Mopar Larry Higgs, backbone bass and Ray Calluori, master of all things percussive. Compared by several music critics to the legendary Dick Dale, Rikardsen draws his playing energy from an array of influences, from punk icon Johnny Thunders to the masters of classic music. Never content to do anything by rote, Rikardsen constantly draws on his vast knowledge of music to take the bands original songs one step beyond. His abilities are showcased on a vintage 1960 Les Paul TV Junior. Calluori was named by Pro-Mark drumsticks as being among the Next Generation of "not yet famous drumers" in the August 1995 issue of Modern Drummer. He's received an endorsement from the Bearing Edge Drum Company and showcases the Georgia company's custom made, purple sparkle set at Sawney Bean's live shows. He drives the band with the Bearing Edge kit and his signature cymbal sounds. His drums roar and whisper on command, jumping from inricate rock fills to hypnotic, ethnic rhythms. Trudel, the latest additon to the band, fills out the bands sound with her 1973 Gibson Midnight Special. Drawing on influences from the masters of classicial music, R&B and rock, Trudel fills out Sawney Bean's sound with her precisely perfected rhythms. The sultry southpaw has been playing a guitar since she was old enough to hold one. Higgs provides the bottom end rhythmic anchor for the band with a "just the facts, maam," Bill Wyman, Dee Dee Ramone style of bass playing, giving the band a solid foundation to come to, with his favorite bass, the Hagstrom "Big Swede". His influences run form the godfathers of Punk, the Ramones, to the legends of garage, the Fleshtones. Vocals are shared by Rikardsen's trashy, NY rock 'n' roll style voice, and Higgs' melodic approach. Together, they weld their influences to form a band whoses recorded performance is only eclipsed by their electrifying live sets on the at clubs such as The Continental, CBGB's, Brownies and the late Coney Island High. The Raves and Reviews!

Making it's own glorious noise since 1993, Buy or Die recording artists Sawney Bean fuses it's own interpretation of surf, garage, punk and no holds barred rock 'n' roll. In May 1999, the band covered "Off Our Backs, Conrad Black" for Texas based Deep Eddy records upcoming tribute to Canadian surfers, "Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet." In January 1999, "Kilm's Wrath" was released on Germany's Banzai Magazine #4 CD and all 600 copies have flown off the racks. Sawney Bean's four track stack of wax, "Aloha from the Interzone" has piled up the raves. Brian Parrish, music writer and DJ for KSYM, picked "Aloha" as one of the top 10 Surf-Instro albums of 1997. (Rooted Magazine, Jan. '98) He wrote "Arnt Rikardsen's high octane guitar-timebomb fuses to Ray Calluori's pounding drums...Primal Instro con Carne." In his review of the EP for Rooted Magazine (Nov. 97), he said, "Aloha shoots far away from surf or garage rock 'n' roll and into something different, even revolutionary." Surf Music Guru Phil Dirt, in Reverb Central cheered, "mighty aggressive assaultive, surfied rockin' instrumental pummelage. Amazing." Al Muzer called it "Raucous ragga-rawk-roller...surfastic....ultra catchy slab of vinyl." (The Aquarian, Jan. 98) Flipside (Jan./Feb 98) commented," Powerful...still gives me the shivers." Robert Makin raved " The ripping surf/garage rock of Sawney Bean does both Dick dale and Johnny Thunders proud." (The Courier-News, Mar.98). Internationally, the EP has recieved great reviews in the German zine, Banzai, Finland's Southern and Rocking magazine and the Danish e-zine, Deadbeat.
