This Company marched from Iowa to California by foot, the longest march in military history. After serving a year, he was discharged in California and went back to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas with a portion of the Regular U.S. Army, with intention of enlisting, and making the Army his career.
After learning of the discovery of gold in California from his Mormon friends, he returned there with his friend, Will Beddome and made his fortune in gold before he was 21 years old.
