February 9, 2002, the Springfield Nature Center offered a program to introduce individuals to the art of fly fishing. This event was sponsored by the Missouri Department of Conservation and took place at Bennett Spring State Park. Pictured are the two groups that participated, the adult class and the Teen group.

Twelve Missouri Trout Fishermen's Association members assisted twenty-two individuals for a day of fly fishing. We assisted them by giving basic casting instruction, introduction to the fly rod and fishing with them individually on the stream.

The spring was dirty and high from the recent rain and run off from the melting snow. There was not much activity on the surface and most of us tried to use flies that could get to the bottom. There were a few fish caught by the students. Actually, one of the participates, caught two fish at the same time with a white bunny strip and caddis larva as a dropper. Also pictured, several teens who were successful hooking a rainbow trout. Rod reported a teen fisherman with him caught a 2.5 pound rainbow below the dam.

The excitement from the students and the polite gestures from the teens by thanking the instructors with a hand shake at the end of the day, made the outing all the better for the members of our club. This was truly an outstanding endeavor and I want to thank all of the members of the Missouri Trout Fishermen's Association, Missouri Department of Conservation and the individuals, who took the first step towards the joys of fly fishing.
