Donkeys at the Brayer Patch
Donkeys are among the most neglected of domestic animals. They are inexpensive, gentle, kind and ask very little in return for a lot of love. But they do require care, and many people obtain them, thinking they will do something with them, only to find that they don't have the patience to deal with a donkey. Donkeys are thinkers, not doers. They have a reputation for being stubborn, but they are, in fact, simply thinking things out in their own minds before acting. A donkey won't do something that will harm it, and this sometimes takes a little more thought than most people are willing to give them time for. In a world that moves quickly, the donkey often falls victim to neglect because of his slow and deliberate approach to life.

Donkeys do make wonderful pets, but they must be appreciated and understood for what they are. They are the most affectionate of all equines, and, unfortunately, one of the most neglected.

These are the feet of a donkey brought in to our rescue, both before and after foot care. Her feet are not unusual for those who have been neglected, and the first pictures were taken after a sizeable amount of her mishapen hoof had already been removed. This donkey, in spite of great efforts to save her, and in spite of being able to get her feet back into a more normal shape, succumbed to her years of neglect.

We do not currently have any donkeys available for adoption. Please check back with us regularly. Meanwhile, please enjoy some of our favorite pictures of donkeys who are now in wonderful loving homes.
