Additional Info: THE MUSICAL TELEPHONE was first performed in a workshop production at Emerson College in Boston on September 29, 1988 as the opening event for the Bellamy Conference, commemorating the centennial of Edward Bellamy's utopian novel, Looking Backward, published in 1888. The novel concerns a man, Julian West, who falls asleep in 1887 and wakes up in 2000, and then "looks backward" to see the improvements that were made since his time.
