Bertha came to America aboard the ship Holsatia, arriving in New York City January 29, 1869. She journeyed with her mother, Augusta and step-father, Martin Sonnenberg. Bertha eventually married a man with the surname Kuhlman and lived in the town of Opie, KS, near Emporia. Bertha Otto was born April 22, 1862 in the Posen province of what was, with the rise of Otto von Bismark, to become Germany.
