The Tennessee Valley Twirling Competition began in 1998. It is held in Tuscumbia, Alabama each year. It has been held at Shoals Community College and Northside Middle School. Groups, majorette lines, and individuals compete each year in several events. The top individual awards are "Miss Tennessee Valley Majorette", "Miss Tennessee Valley Strut Queen", and "Miss Shoals Twirler". Contest t-shirts, twirling shirts and shorts, batons, shoes, costumes, accessories, and many other items are sold at the contest. The Deshler High School Band Boosters run the concession stand. Tuscumbia is located in Northwest Alabama in the Quad Cities and Tennessee Valley area. Its neighboring cities are Muscle Shoals, Sheffield, Florence, and Russellville. The Shoals area has many tourist attractions including: Ivy Green (the birthplace of Helen Keller), Alabama Music Hall of Fame, Belle Monte Masion, FAME Recording Studios, Deibert Children's Museum, Tennessee Valley Art Center, the birthplace of W.C. Handy, many Civil War and historical sites and homes, beautiful parks, and much more! Tuscumbia is within one hour of Decatur and Huntsville, and within two hours of Birmingham.
