Original History
The company,known as the "Stanly Yankee Hunters",was raised in Stanly County and enlisted in Albemarle. It was mustered into service on July 29,1861,and assigned to the 28th Regiment as Company D. After joining the regiment(probably Sept.21,1861)the company functioned as a part of the regiment,and its history for the war period is reported as a part of the regimental history.
The Regiment was organized at Camp Fisher,near High Point,On September 21,1861,for twelve months' service. On September 30 the regiment left for Wilmington,where it arrivedon October 1 and was assigned toGeneral Joseph R. Anderson's command.

When the army was paroled on April 12,1865, 230 members of the 28th were present.
