Beam Me Up......Enjorlas?
by Mlle Becca Courfeyrac
“Mr. Paris, what are you doing?”
Tom Paris looked up from the lab table in sickbay where he had been sitting, engrossed in a thick novel.
“Oh, Doctor, just reading.” He turned the book over to show the title, Les Miserables “My, I didn’t know you did such heavy reading, Tom.” The hologram replied. “But it’s a wonderful book.”
“Ya, the musical’s not half bad either.” Yes, the young, blond lieutenant thought to himself, I’m actually going to get away without doing these tests! “Actually, I’ve read it before. I’m just doing some research, I guess you could say.”
“Research? On 19th century Earth?”
“Well, I’m planning to make some additions to Fairhaven.”
Tom quickly realized he’d said too much. “Well,” the Doctor snapped, “you can save your research for later. In the meantime, I believe there are some tests you are supposed to be running. The Captain assigned you to be assistant, and I tend to use you to the fullest of my extent.” So much for getting away with it, Tom, he thought to himself.
The Doctor wandered away to check on a patient who had just come in, humming “Master of the House” as he went.

“Oh, Tom, not Fairhaven again!” a young klingon woman sauntered over to where Tom was sitting in the mess hall, later that day. She looked over his shoulder at the small computer he had in his hand. “Can’t you leave off it for a little while? You’ve been working non-stop since I got the holo-deck up and running.”
“Sorry, B' Elanna, I want to get some additions made.”
B' Elanna laughed. “You’ve almost created all of Ireland in that program. How much more can you add?”
“Oh, how about a few big cities. B' Elanna, think. With a few presses of a button, I can create bustling New York, Victorian London, or even post-revolutionary Paris, in all its glory.”
“All contained within the Fairhaven program?”
“Why not, they’re the same time period. Besides, it will give the residents some travel space too.”
B' Elanna shook her head. “Tom, they’re just holograms. I just don’t understand how you can become attached to someone that’s not real. Speak of the devil-”
Captain Kathyrn Janeway had just walked over to the table where the two had been talking. It was well known that she had a relationship with Michael Sullivan, a hologram character from Tom’s program. B' Elanna usually respected the captain, but she did like to scoff at her behind her back about her “boyfriend”
“Tom,” Captain Janeway was smiling broadly, “did I hear you say that your making a holodeck for 19th century Paris? Hey, just for laughs, add the Café Musain.”
“ I didn’t know you were such a Les Mis fan, Captain.”
“Oh, but I am,” she grinned. “And anyway, I bet Michael would love to see Paris. He’s been dying to do some traveling. When do you think you can have the program done?”
“Probably by the end of the week.”
“Well then,” she winked, “I’ve got to go make a date.”
B' Elanna mearly rolled her eyes. “Both of you are acting like such children.”

It was a beautiful spring day in Fairhaven, Ireland (well, actually it was always a beautiful spring day there because the ship controlled its weather). Captain Janeway and Michael Sullivan were strolling arm-in-arm down the main street at the center of town. Both of them had been very quiet that day, but Captain Janeway finally spoke up. “Michael,” she said, “have you ever wanted to go to Pairs?”
“Paris, Katie? Why would I want to go to Pairs? I don’t know a stick of French.” He answered in his calm Irish brogue.
“Oh, Michael, but it would be so romantic!” she smiled radiantly at him.
He smiled back. “I’d take you to the moon if I could Katie, but I’m only a poor bartender. Where am I going to get that kind of money?”
“I’m a ship’s captain, remember?” she laughed. “I’ll make the arrangements.” She started to leave, but suddenly turned around. “Oh, Michael, I was wondering. What is the date here?”
“Why, it’s May 30th.”
“No, I mean the year.”
“Last I checked it was 1832.”
“Nice one Tom,” Catharine chuckled to herself, shaking her head as she walked away.
