The National Ocean Sciences Bowl was inaugurated in 1998 to provide a forum for students excelling in math and science to receive national recognition for their diligence and talents while at the same time broadening their awareness and understanding of the oceans. Sponsored by the National Marine Educators Association and the Consortium for Oceanographic Research and Education, over 1500 students and coaches from over 300 schools have particpated in the National Ocean Sciences Bowl.
In order to compete, participants form teams, composed of four students, one alternate and a coach. All participating teams are provided with a resource guide, competition rules and sample questions to assist in their preparation for the bowl. These teams practice to compete in rapid-fire, question and answer games. Questions are divided into two format types; multiple choice and short answer. The subject areas of emphasis include biology, chemistry, geology, physics, history, and economics of the world's oceans, as well as navigation, geography and ocean related current events.
At the regional competitions, high school students from the surrounding areas will test their general knowledge of the marine sciences. The national competition is similar to the regional competitions, with one exception. At the national competition there is one "team challenge" question in each round. This type of question is more difficult, uses graphics, and has a greater point value. As a result of the greater complexity, teams are given more time and may collaborate as a group.
There are currently over twenty regionals beingheld throughout the country with each regional winner advancing to the NOSB. Prizes for the winning teams at the regionals have included: participation in research vessels, behind the scenes tours at local aquaria, scientific equipment, VIP tours at research centers, books, scholarships, and various other marine related prizes.
As the popularity of the Shore Bowl and the National Ocean Sciences Bowl continues to grow more and more people will become aware of our oceans. It truly is a wonderful learning experience as well as a great deal of fun.
THE VERY FIRST SHORE BOWL - 2000
The road to the National Ocean Sciences Bowl final competition which is held in a different host city each year begins at one of the twenty regional sites across the country. Regional competitions take place during the month of February while the finals are in April. Each regional competition has its own name which identifies the region. The New Jersey/Pennsylvania/New York regional is known as the Shore Bowl. The very first Shore Bowl was held in February 2000 and was hosted by the Rutgers Institute of Marine and Coastal Science. Twelve teams from New Jersey and New York competed with the Marine Academy of Science and Technology (MAST) in Monmouth County walking away wih the top prize. Nottingham High School of Hamilton, New Jersey made a very impressive showing and captured everyones attention with their Hawaiian shirts and sandals.

The 2001 Shore Bowl relocated to a new site and expanded from the first Shore Bowl.
The venue moved from the Cook Campus of Rutgers to the more impressive student
center at Rutgers' Busch Campus. The competition also expanded including teams
from Pennsylvania as well as New York and New Jersey.
Once again Nottingham was a spirited group with their Buffett style Hawaian shirts
along with their whale swallowing SCUBA Diver T-shirts which the students made prior
to the competition. Nottingham took the Shore Bowl by surprise as they ran off six
straight wins to capture the A Division title.
The highlight of the day though came down to the championship round which featured
the defending Champions, MAST Academy against newcomer Germantown Academy.
With one loss a piece, it came down to the final round and the final question. With no
time remaining the MAST Academy of Sandy Hook took the championship. As the
2001 champions, MAST was rewarded for their outstanding achievement by
representing the region in the National Oceans Science Bowl finals in Miami, Florida.
