At my first concert December 1, 1979 At Tingley Coliseum in Albuquerque, NM, we got to the show around 1 in the afternoon. A cluster of people were out there already with sleeping bags & such. People were climbing the trees trying to get in through upper story windows. People were singing KISS songs & celebrating the event. The crowd grew huge & major pushing was going on. Many policemen were called upon to resist it, but they ended up having to open the doors early around 4 or 5pm. There was no sound check probably because of that.
Immediately after they opened the doors, we stormed in & it was a mad dash to the front of the stage. Days later there were 11 deaths at the Who concert in Cincinnati, and it was easy to visualize that happening after experiencing this. We were very close to the front. At the time, they didn't tape down any chairs & it was general admission. The chairs were all neatly set at first, but they soon became an insane twisted wreckage of chaos. The concert was incredible!!
I've been collecting KISS since '76. Destroyer was my 1st album & I borrowed Alive from neighbor for months & I remember the Rock & Roll Over commercial on TV, so I had to have it too. Then, I got all the albums up to that point around Spring-Summer of '77 when Love Gun was released. I was lucky & got first print blue labels of all LP's.
I have many toys & a nice collection, but mainly my focus has always been & still is the music. KISS has influenced me in music. I have played in bands in front of audiences performing my own material since 7th grade. I play guitar, bass & sing. I have learned and played many, many KISS covers too including all the main songs plus some wild obscurer stuff like, "2,000 Man," "Strange Ways," "Rip It Out," "Nowhere To Run," "Is That You" and "Wouldn't You Like To Know Me," , etc. etc etc. I remember the 1st bootlegs, Destroys Anaheim, Blitz London & Takes Tokyo I had before that 1st concert. I had a tape of the Dynasty show from NY before that show too. I remember them on Land Of Hype & Glory, Paul Lynn, Night Flight USA, etc. & of course Phantom. I even audio taped Phantom with all my friends comments in the room. Funny stuff! Hope you got a kick out of reading some of my early KISS memories.
