THE NEW JERSEY CHAPTER
The Idea for a New Jersey Chapter of the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society (AAHGS)was first discussed September 13, 1989. Under the guiding hands F of the late Jean Sampson Scott, Chapter Establishment Chairperson fo the AAHGS and A steering group led by Eliabeth Peale Johnson and Theodore Brunson, Director of the Afro-American Historical and Cultural Museum of Jersey City, N.J., The idea became a reality, with Mr. Brunson offering the museum as its meeting place.
on October 14th 1989, eleven persons signed the chapter establishment application S as charter members. The officiaI chapter of The New Jersey Chapter was presented by Sylvia Cooke Martin, National AAHGS president on April 13, 1990.


THE NEW JERSEY CHAPTER
The activities of the chapter are in keeping with the obfectives of the national society -  to promote scholarly research and publication of African American History and the African diaspora genealogy, and to provide a network within which members may share their research techniques and findings.


THE NEW JERSEY CHAPTER
Conducts genealogy workshops throughout the state, established a speaker's bureau, led members on trips to local brances of the national archives, publish journals and conducting a project of identifying people of color residing in New Jersey counties from the United States Census for 1880.
Chapter members provide programs in researching their ancestry, how to plan family , reunions, observance of Black History Month and Kwanzaa.
