Comparison of  "Class Size" by Ability Grouping Level at CHS 1994-95 to 2002-03

Course instruction at Columbia High School historically has been based upon individual student abilities with multiple sections of the same course offered at different ability levels.  The data in the chart below compares the number of total sections per Grouping Level (Remedial  to Level 6) in the English and Mathematics Departments for the first semester in four different school years.

Despite declining performance on various objective measures, it appears from the data that the abilities of the CHS students improved dramatically in 2001-02 and 2002-03  as compared to 1998-99 based on the change in the number of students in the higher level sections.  Or could there be another explanation?

*Remedial or Supplemental course section are one semester only in English and 9th & 10th grade Math.  For an approximation of the total number of CHS students enrolled in such courses, multiply # of students by 2.

Data from SO-M district documents.  FTE is an abbreviation for Full Time Equivalent teachers.
