Erie 4-4-2 #537 in ex NJ&NY Hillsdale, NJ yard, 1937
Hillsdale served as a major station and engine facility from the 1870's to the end of steam in the 1950's. The Pascack Valley line of the old NJ&NY was the last Erie line to run steam.  The unique 1871 station still stands, restored in Erie colors, though the yard is now the site of a food store (Kings) and a Wendy's.

Erie Map, 1880's with New City Branch, Pascack Valley Line and Piermont Branch
I first came to know what was the NJ&NYRR in the late 1970's, when I would meet my father at the Park Ridge station, and occasionally ride into new York with him via Hoboken.  By that time, it was the Erie Lackawanna operated by the New Jersey Dept. of Transportation (NJDOT), and the blue and silver cars were decorated with the EL diamond and NJDOT logo.  I always loved watching the trains pass through and riding them when I could- and still do to this day.  Over time, I realized the great impact that the railroad had on Park Ridge and the other towns along the line, establishing new communities, like Park Ridge, and enhancing existing ones like Hackensack.
The Piermont branch is a newer area of interest for me, but I included it in light of a few related factors- it goes back to the earliest days of Erie, historically it helped develop Rockland County, NY like the Pascack Valley Line did in NJ, and finally it interchanged with the NJNY at Nanuet and the NJNY ran concurrently on its tracks between Nanuet and Spring Valley.
This page will always be a work in progress, and it depends not only on my own research, historical and contemporary, but also on the memories and information of all railfans who visit.
