- Andante from Piano Sonata 15, Op. 28 (Beethoven/Raspa) string orchestra
Beethoven's sonatas are all beautiful, but this one struck me as a piece just waiting to be graced by the sound of a string orchestra. This work contains some advanced rhythmic figures, such as dotted 16th figures, double dotted 8ths, triplet 16ths as well as the a' la pointe bowing which is used extensively. The advanced rhythmic figures and key changes will make this a great learning piece and the brilliance of Beethoven's writing will make it a pleasure to play again and again. Christmas Music
- We Wish You A Merry Christmas (traditional/Raspa) string orchestra
This will make a wonderful alternative to the traditional carol. I used a theme and variations approach for this arrangement utilizing dances for the variations. The piece begins with a traditional setting. The first variation is a waltz which then moves to a tango. The piece ends with a gigue. This is a great new way to perform a holiday standard. A Popular choice! This piece is a great way to work on triplets and introduce the minuet/trio form. The work, which is relatively simple since it is comprised primarily of quarters and eighths, will allow you the time you need to work on the triplet rhythms which occur in the majority of the parts throughout the piece. The other key changes are embedded in the musical fabric providing a great teaching opportunity. Purcell Transcriptions

Originally written for harpsichord, this work is absolutely gorgeous when performed by a string orchestra. The work features a lot of dotted 8-16 figures as well as some syncopation and lots of trill work. If your lower strings often feel neglected, get this piece. Everyone in your group has an opportunity to share in the spotlight since the prominent parts shift back and forth a number of times between all the instruments. This work, in 6/8 time, is in the key of d minor and features dotted rhythms and a couple of time signature changes. No one is neglected in this piece. The prominent parts are constantly shifted back and forth between all the instruments in a fugal style so everyone gets to play an important part. Since the instruments continually hand off the prominent parts to each other, the concept of balance and listening can be taught or reinforced. Duration 2 3/4 minutes

This quiet, flowing, lyrical piece in 3/4 time begins in the key of G Major and shifts to the dominant as well as the parallel minor during the course of the work. The first violins carry the melody during the first section with syncopated figures in the 2nd violins & violas giving it a nice flow. The violas take the lead during the beginning of the second section when the piece shifts to the parallel minor. The lower strings are used primarily to provide the pulse with pizz bass and dotted halfs in the the cellos except for the second section where some imitation is used against the melody played by the viola. This work is accessible to a high school group and would make a great addition to any concert. Duration 4 minutes

String Quartet
This popular new work was commissioned by Dr. Karl Moyer for performance at mid-night mass on December 24, 1998 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The work is a new work based on the familiar hymn "Silent Night" by Franz Gruber. The work features fugal writing where all the instruments share in the prominent parts, dotted rhythms, syncopation and a change in time signatures. This will make a wonderful, new addition to your Holiday Concert. Duration 4 1/2 minutes
