  • My Very First Waltz (Raspa)
  • Reviewed in Clavier - September 2005

This waltz is in the key of C Major and in C position with phrasing and fingering clearly marked. Although harmonies overlap, one hand is either sustaining a note or is a rest when the other hand is actively playing a moving line. Interest is maintained by shifting the melody to the bass clef in measure 9 and then back to the treble clef in measure 17. The shifting of the melody will also present a great opportunity to introduce the concept of balance.

    Level 1

  • My Very First Waltz (Raspa)
  • This waltz is in the key of C Major and in C position with phrasing and fingering clearly marked. Although harmonies overlap, one hand is either sustaining a note or is a rest when the other hand is actively playing a moving line. Similar to the prep level version, this version shifts the melody from the right hand to the left hand and then back to the right hand so the concept of balance can be taught. The accompaniment now has a two note chord rather than a single note and includes repeat markings with 1st and 2nd endings. The ending requires a shift of the left hand one octave lower. This piece is not only a great opportunity for teaching various concepts but makes a great recital piece as well.

  • Reviewed in Clavier - September 2005

This piece, two quarter time, begins with an eighth note pickup and alternates the melody between the left and right hands. Use of staccato and legato as well as alternating dynamic levels make the piece fun and interesting. Your student will enjoy playing this piece and will learn much about dynamics and balance. This also makes a great recital piece!

  • Essay on Silent Night II (Gruber/Raspa)

This piece begins with a traditional arrangement of the popular hymn, Silent Night. The first portion of the initial theme is then used as a basis for the second section. Dotted quarter-eighth rhythms, extended hand positions, octave shifts, tempo changes pedaling and a liberal use of dynamics make this piece a great teaching piece and a wonderful change of pace for the holiday concert.

  • Essay on The First Noel (traditional/Raspa)

This piece, in C Major, uses the gestures of the original hymn for a new look at an old standard. The piece, in 4 quarter time, utilizes an Alberti bass and some extended hand positions including a couple of brief arpeggiated figures (one octave only). Although there are two sixteenth notes in measure 5, the rest of the piece has note durations from 8ths through whole notes. Thirds in the mid section of the piece contrast nicely to the opening section and pedaling is notated throughout. This would make a nice change of pace for your student's next holiday recital or concert.

  • Six Etudes for the Hand Over Hand Style Arpeggio (Raspa)
  • Reviewed in Clavier - May/June 2005

This set of etudes is designed to supplement the student's study of the hand over hand arpeggio while providing the student with an enjoyable diversion from dry practice of the technical exercises. The arpeggios covered are C Major, G Major, F Major, a minor, e minor and d minor. These are the six arpeggios listed as requirements in the Minnesota Music Teachers Piano Syllabus (2002).

Each etude is preceded by a musically notated arpeggio with fingerings as well as a keyboard graphic with fingerings noted on the keys. The five finger position is maintained virtually throughout the set of etudes. There are only a couple minor deviations from the five finger position and the fingering for the deviation is circled.
