Eleuthera Island is approximately 200 miles east/southeast of Miami Florida, and 60 miles east of Nassau. As one of the "family" islands, it is bordered by the deep Atlantic to the east, characterized by dark blue waters and rough surf. The west side in striking contrast, is mostly calm, shallow, and crystal clear at 50 feet or more, as the Gateway to the Caribbean. At some places along the island you can stand in one spot and observe both shores.

There are nearly 700 Islands in the Bahamas, of which fewer than 30 are inhabited by the quarter million strong population. They have a colorful history as a haven for pirates, center for blockade runners during the Civil War, and bootleggers during the American Prohibition Era. The Islands were a British colony right up until 1973 when they gained their independence - but they still drive on the left side of the road!
