GROSSE POINTE HIGH SCHOOL JULY NEWSLETTER
Once upon a time in the Kingdom of Heaven, God was missing for six days. Eventually, Michael the archangel found him, resting on the seventh day. He inquired of God, 'Where have you been?'
God sighed a deep sigh of satisfaction and proudly pointed downwards through the clouds, 'Look Michael, look what I've made.' Archangel Michael looked puzzled and said, 'What is it?'
'It's a planet' replied God, 'and I've put Life on it. I'm going to call It Earth and it's going to be a great place of balance '
'Balance?', inquired Michael, still confused.
God explained, pointing to different parts of earth, 'For example, Northern Europe will be a place of great opportunity and wealth while southern Europe is going to be poor; the Middle East over there will be a hot spot. Over here I've placed a continent of white people and over there is a continent of black people,' God continued, pointing to different countries 'This one will be extremely hot and arid while this one will be very cold and covered in ice.'
The Archangel, impressed by God's work, then pointed to a large land mass and said, 'What's that one?'
'Ah,' said God. 'That's Michigan, the most glorious place on earth. You'll notice that it is made in the fashion of my hand, the Hand of God. There are beautiful lakes, rivers, sunsets and rolling hills. The people from Michigan are going to be modest, intelligent and humorous and they are going to be found traveling the world. They will be extremely sociable, hard working and high achieving, and they will be known throughout the world as diplomats and carriers of peace.'
Michael gasped in wonder and admiration but then proclaimed, 'What about balance, God?' 'You said there would be balance!'
God replied wisely, 'Wait until you see the idiots I'm putting around Them in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois Wisconsin and Canada.'

MARK BOERNER - I've been in a band for the past 8 years - Dead Serious Band - deadseriousband.com. We play classic rock, and everyone would know (maybe not love) the music. We've just added a young 38 year old keyboard player and our music is starting to lead in the head banging direction. Rod Rose, Wayne Nemath, Larry Crane, Linda Blanke? Bernie Allard, Doug Dover, Pete Allen, Tom Fine, Leon Nahad, Bob Page, Robin Wright, - I took a guitar lesson from him as a Junior and leaned rock an roll woman by Buffalo Springfield. This guy had been playing at school functions since he was 8, In the middle of this lesson I was so impressed with how talented this guy was, I asked how he figured this stuff out. He reply - when I close my eyes I see the chords and music! I knew I was not quite at his level!! All these people were huge influences and helped me get started. I'd love to hear anything they've done recently or recorded in the past.
IRENE (COTZIAS) WINGFIELD - Sugar-free gum contains XYLITOL. DEADLY FOR DOGS.
MATT DEVINE (ALUMNI OF THE MONTH) - First, last June I successfully climbed Mt. Rainier in Washington State (where I currently live). It was the culmination of several years of trying, and I wrote a "book" about the experience. It was physically the most difficult thing I've ever done. Anyway, the "book" is attached, in case you'd like to read it or simply view the pictures. Next, my 1971 Plymouth Duster restoration is nearly complete. The car was purchased brand new by my parents from Westborne Chrysler Plymouth in 1971, and in 1975 it was given to me to drive to Washington where I had accepted a job with Boeing. The car now has 390,000 miles on it, the body was rebuilt about eight years ago (damn salt), and the engine was rebuilt for the first time in 2006. A picture of me and the car appear in the GPHS 35th reunion book. I do take the Duster to shows, maybe once a year. It is really something to be in a show with 60's and 70's era Chargers, Barracudas, Dusters, Darts, New Yorkers, Newports, you name it. It certainly takes one back. Finally, I just had a visit in Washington from my mom a few days ago. She turns 90 this fall, and still plays tennis several times a week. I think she can still whip me, so I don’t challenge her to a match! She still lives in Grosse Pointe. She's outlived two husbands and about three boyfriends. It's now sort of like the line George Burns used to quote, which was "I'd date women my age, but there are no women my age." Well, I guess there are not too many men her age, either. Hope all is well with you, and thanks again for all your work on behalf of our class of 69. JANE MUNRO - I just saw your picture. You look GREAT. Not much different than in the old days. Nice to see an old face. I love dogs too. I have 4 rescue dogs from Silkey Terrier to an Irish Wolfhound. I use to own a dog boarding business and I bread Giant Schnauzers. Lots of work but lots of fun too.
DEBBIE (PORTER) DEMEESTER – Has two new photographs of her (3) grand daughters and another of Debbie, her son Matthew and his new daughter. http://community.webshots.com/user/46120619
JEAN (PULLEY) MILLER - Just love these newsletters! Attached is a pic of our boat The Sea Turtle. We're having a blast sailing around San Francisco Bay! Both my husband and myself are taking advanced sailing lessons and plan to spend this summer and next becoming "very good" sailors before we head out to blue water. Over Memorial weekend, we both got turtle tattoos! Mine is on my upper back (just below my neck) and my husband's is on the calf of his leg.
We do plan on attending the reunion next July. I don't have any family left in that neck of the woods so I'll need a list of hotels/motels you recommend. Do you have an e-mail list of other '69 classmates here in the Bay area? I probably won't know them but it would be nice to make contact.
MOLLY STRONG (ALUMNI OF THE MONTH) - Warmest greetings to you, Denise, and to all my former classmates who are reading and/or contributing to the Alumni Newsletter. In sharing these words, I am tracing this feeling of bittersweetness as I sink into my strong connection and love for Michigan - something that I know will always be with me, and no matter how far away I am and how long it is between trips back to the home of my childhood. Before I say anything else, I want to deeply thank you, Denise, for being the Networker that you are. If it were not for your efforts, and those of others, I would not have been able to connect with so many people over the last several years who I once knew so long ago. These connections have meant so much to me. So has the news I read from people I once knew from my grade school to high school years. It has been sad to hear of the losses of classmates. And there is so much I am grateful for. I really get a kick out of so much! Renewing relationships has been the most rewarding. One of the most outrageous experiences was reconnecting with our former English exchange student, Roger Carey, who reminded me that I had sent him (I'm embarrassed to say!) a 28 page hand-written letter that I wrote over a 2 month period from April to June of 1969, following Roger's return to his home in England. I had no remembrance of that letter or anything I had said... until Roger sent me a copy. Talk about time travel - suddenly there I was 18 years old again reliving things I had no memory of. WOW! - were we that WILD??! ... Maybe I should own that I was more... out there than I had remembered... All this was a bit embarrassing, but - most of all - I was so grateful. Again, it is the relationships - hearing new stories, remembering old ones, and the renewing of some old friendships - that I am so appreciative of . Thank you! I have lived in Oregon since 1975. It is so beautiful and I am so happy here. That said, I will always have Motown running through my veins and a love for thunderstorms and snow and swimming in lakes or any open body of water. Rather than going on, for anyone who is interested in hearing or seeing any more of my life today, you can go to my blog at www.mollystrongheart.blogspot.com, or you can email me at mollystrong@verizon.net. I welcome all contacts. :-) And for anyone wishing to visit the beautiful Northwest, please be in touch. My door is open. I hope to come with my partner (Ken) to the 40th class reunion next year. It will have been 11 years since I was last in Michigan and 20 years since my last reunion. I really look forward to it! Thanks again to you, Denise, and brightest blessings to everyone.
WILLIAM SCHLEICHER - I so love getting your newsletter every month.

I just want to thank all of you for your educational emails over the past year. Thanks to you, I no longer open a public bathroom door without using a paper towel. I can't sit down on the hotel bedspread, because I can only imagine what has happened on it since it was last washed. I can't enjoy lemon slices in my tea or on my seafood anymore because lemon peels have been found to contain all kinds of nasty germs including feces. I have trouble shaking hands with someone who has been driving because the number one pass-time while driving alone is picking your nose (although cell phone usage may be taking the number one spot) Eating a Little Debbie sends me on a guilt trip because I can only imagine how many gallons of trans fats I have consumed over the years. I can't touch any woman's purse for fear she has placed it on the floor of a public bathroom. Yuck! I must send my special thanks to whoever sent me the one about poop in the glue on envelopes, because I now have to use a wet sponge with every envelope that needs sealing. Also, now I have to scrub the top of every can I open for the same reason. I no longer have any savings because I gave it to a sick girl (Penny Brown) who is about to die in the hospital for the 1,387,258th time. I no longer have any money at all, but that will change once I receive the $15,000 that Bill Gates/Microsoft and AOL are sending me for participating in their special e-mail program. I no longer worry about my soul because I have 363,214 angels looking out for me, and St. Theresa's novena has granted my every wish. I no longer eat KFC because their chickens are actually horrible mutant freaks with no eyes or feathers. I no longer use cancer-causing deodorants even though I smell like a water buffalo on a hot day. Thanks to you, I have learned that my prayers only get answered if I forward an email to seven of my friends and make a wish within five minutes. Because of your concern I no longer drink Coca Cola because it can remove toilet stains. I no longer can buy gasoline without taking someone along to watch the car so a serial killer won't crawl in my back seat when I'm pumping gas. I no longer drink Pepsi or Dr Pepper since the people who make these products are atheists who refuse to put 'Under God' on their cans. I no longer use Saran wrap in the microwave because it causes cancer. And thanks for letting me know I can't boil a cup of water in the microwave anymore because it will blow up in my face...disfiguring me for life. I no longer check the coin return on pay phones because I could be pricked with a needle infected with AIDS. I no longer go to shopping malls because someone will drug me with a perfume sample and rob me. I no longer receive packages from UPS or FedEx since they are actually Al Qaeda in disguise. I no longer shop at Target since they are French and don't support our American troops or the Salvation Army. I no longer answer the phone because someone will ask me to dial a number for which I will get a phone bill with calls to Jamaica, Uganda & Singapore and Uzbekistan. I no longer buy expensive cookies from Neiman Marcus since I now have their recipe. Thanks to you, I can't use anyone's toilet but mine because a big brown African spider is lurking under the seat to cause me instant death when it bites my butt. And thanks to your great advice, I can't ever pick up $5.00 dropped in the parking lot because it probably was placed there by a sex molester waiting underneath my car to grab my leg. I can no longer drive my car because I can't buy gas from certain gas companies! If you don't send this e-mail to at least 144,000 people in the next 70 minutes, a large dove with diarrhea will land on your head at 5:00 PM this afternoon and the fleas from 12 camels will infest your back, causing you to grow a hairy hump. I know this will occur because it actually happened to a friend of my next door neighbor's ex-mother-in-law's second husband's cousin's beautician... Have a wonderful day... Oh, by the way..... A German scientist from Argentina, after a lengthy study, has discovered that people with insufficient brain activity read their e-mail with their hand on the mouse. Don't bother taking it off now, it's too late *************************************************
Manure: In the 16th and 17th centuries, everything had to be transported by ship and it was also before commercial fertilizer's invention, so large shipments of manure were common. It was shipped dry, because in dry form it weighed a lot less than when wet, but once water (at sea) hit it, it not only became heavier, but the process of fermentation began again, of which a by product is methane gas. As the stuff was stored below decks in bundles you can see what could (and did) happen. Methane began to build up below decks and the first time some one came below at night with a lantern, BOOOOM! Several ships were destroyed in this manner before it was determined just what was happening. After that, the bundles of manure were always stamped with the term 'Ship High In Transit' on them, which meant for the sailors to stow it high enough off the lower decks so that any water that came into the hold would not touch this volatile cargo and start the production of methane. Thus evolved the term ' S.H.I.T ' , (Ship High In Transport) which has come down through the centuries and is in use to this very day. You probably did not know the true history of this word. Neither did I. I had always thought it was a golf term.

Remember the past and the times we had together in Junior High School and High School.
Remember night skiing at Mt Brighton, Mt Christine, Mt Holly and Pine Knob?
The days of the mom's staying home and taking care of the family are gone for most of us. My mom wasn't like Donna Reed and June Cleaver and didn't wear her pearls to cook in. The family now sits in front of the TV or in front of the computer - I know we do. But growing up with our sons we ate dinner out almost every night. With our working schedule no one had time to cook. And that is why we have some many of us are over weight and have diabetes. Remember the milk chutes? I remember the Twin Pines milkman bringing our milk. Dennis had a bakery truck that delivered pastries. Our alumni Mike Stewart still has the personal touch and bring milk to his customer. Now we phone Schwans for home delivery.
Remember "The Snug" in 1969 sandwiches were .95 and sundaes were .75. The Bar-B-Q House on Mack a whole slab of ribs $3.75 and shrimp cocktails were .95. Mr. Tony's Sub on Mack 10" sub .99 and 15" $1.55. Remember Mauna Loa, Little Harry's and The Old Place just to name some of my favorite places to wine and dine me. Remember saving gum wrappers to make a chain. Or taking the guys tabs off of the back of their shirts? Or taking paper and folding it to make a guessing game. We had some great times. Remember summer time swimming at the local parks. And our favorite memories will always be the Grosse Pointe War Memorial. Ballroom dancing, art classes, ski club, plays and all the other programs they offered. And the next generation our son Shawn enjoyed breakfast with the Easter Bunny.
When did we quit calling "emergency brakes" and now "parking brakes" became the proper term. Every one covered his or her hardwood floors with wall-to-wall carpeting. Today, everyone replaces their wall-to-wall carpeting with hardwood floors. When's the last time you heard the phrase "in a family way?" It's hard to imagine that the word "pregnant" was once considered a little too graphic, a little too clinical for use in polite company. So we had all that talk about stork visits and "being in a family way" or simply "expecting." Apparently "brassiere" is a word no longer in usage. I guess it's just "bra" now. "Unmentionables" probably wouldn't be understood at all. It's hard to recall that this word was once said in a whisper -"divorce." And no one is called a "divorcee" anymore. Come to think of it, "confirmed bachelors" and "career girls" are long gone, too. '60s word -- "rat fink." Oh, what a nasty put-down! Poor Ray Fink is properly glad to hear that word again after all these years.
I miss those made-up marketing words that were meant to sound so modern and now sound so retro. Words like "DynaFlow" and "ElectraLuxe." Introducing the 1963 Admiral TV, now with "SpectraVision!" Nevertheless, I chuckle every time I hear Emeril say "ice box"....I'm much too young to use that term!!!
MEMORIES
A little house with three bedrooms and one car on the street, A mower that you had to push to make the grass look neat.
In the kitchen on the wall we only had one phone, And no need for recording things, someone was always home.
We only had a living room where we would congregate, Unless it was at mealtime in the kitchen where we ate.
We had no need for family rooms or extra rooms to dine, When meeting as a family those two rooms would work out fine.
We only had one TV set, and channels maybe two, But always there was one of them with something worth the view.
For snacks we had potato chips that tasted like a chip, And if you wanted flavor there was Lipton's onion dip.
Store-bought snacks were rare because my mother liked to cook, And nothing can compare to snacks in Betty Crocker's book.
Weekends were for family trips or staying home to play, We all did things together -- even go to church to pray.
When we did our weekend trips depending on the weather, No one stayed at home because we liked to be together.
Sometimes we would separate to do things on our own, But we knew where the others were without our own cell phone.
Then there were the movies with your favorite movie star, And nothing can compare to watching movies in your car.
Then there were the picnics at the peak of summer season, Pack a lunch and find some trees and never need a reason.
Get a baseball game together with all the friends you know, Have real action playing ball -- and no game video.
Remember when the doctor used to be the family friend, And didn't need insurance or a lawyer to defend?
The way that he took care of you or what he had to do, Because he took an oath and strived to do the best for you.
Remember going to the store and shopping casually, And when you went to pay for it you used your own money?
Nothing that you had to swipe or punch in some amount, Remember when the cashier person had to really count?
The milkman used to go from door to door, And it was just a few cents more than going to the store.
There was a time when mailed letters came right to your door, Without a lot of junk mail ads sent out by every store.
The mailman knew each house by name and knew where it was sent; There were not loads of mail addressed to "present occupant."
There was a time when just one glance was all that it would take, And you would know the kind of car, the model and the make.
They didn't look like turtles trying to squeeze out every mile; They were streamlined, white walls, fins, and really had some style.
