Rhododendron Dell, Golden Gate Park
These trees are phenomenally gorgeous. They
peak in blooms in late April and early May.
When I begin a piece I make a number of small
makrso on the page with a light pastel, usually orange, but sometimes
yellow or lime green. I begin the sketch by placing volumes and
forms. People who believe they cannot draw can perhaps take heart
when looking at the undersketch for my pastels. The first few
marks do not look like much. I think people give up too soon.
I have made many pieces that don't work out very well. Sometimes
it's a composition problem. Sometimes it's left brain rendering.
These things happen and they are all good for learning. One of
the difficulties I have in nature is that I feel tied to drawing
what is in front of me to the detriment of composition. The solution
is to either choose my scenes better or consider leaving some
things out. The photograph above is from a different angle from
the one at which the animation was drawn. In the clide-by-slide
show the view angels are the same for comparison. I put up this
picture because you can see relative size compared to the people
walking in front of the tree. |
