NU-SCRIPT Nu-Script is the tool developed by R. D. Clark for typing the NVC symbols. Other Nu-Vue-Cue materials will give the differences/comparisons of Se-Script, Vue-Script, Cal-I-Cue, plus Nu-Script and Cue Script. These instructions have been adapted to the CUEtran board, also. The CUEtran board uses a conventional ETRAN Board and makes it into a board of Sounds. Nu-Script uses the 40+ Sounds used in Nu-Vue-Cue (based on Cued Speech by Dr. Orin Cornett) Cue Script is the tool used for writing the symbols and was developed by Mary Elsie Daisy.
If you use Cued Speech, please note the arrows of chin/throat and side/throat positions are written with .. and : symbols in NVC. In Cued Speech, the throat position of diphthongs is cued with the 5 hand (_////). This is understood when using NU-SCRIPT symbols. In CS, the vowel alone is understood to be cued with the _//// hand . In CS, the consonant alone is understood being placed at the Side position. A code to type Side-down position is written in Nu-Script when feasible. Cued Speech uses mouth configurations in place of the NVC color codes. Nu-Vue-Cue is a New View of Cueing. In both NVC and CS there will be three (3) designated codes for cueing In CS there will be the Hands, Positions and Mouth Configurations. In NVC there will be the Hands, Positions, and colors/numbers code. Nu-Vue-Cue charts can be used independently of CS symbolism by using phonetic spelling codes with Guideline charts. However, for the hearing impaired the CS symbols makes the tool appropriate for all clients. It has been beneficial for the hearing as well. For a blind client, we made charts with raised letters. Note the transfer of learning even to English as a Second Language.
CAUTION: In Nu-Vue-Cue materials the sequence of the SOUNDS must be in the proper order. Thus d, p, zh is always in that order because of the color coding necessary for the MH student using eye gaze charts. In Cued Speech, users can use any order such as p, d, zh; zh, p, d; or d, p, zh. In NVC the hands are understood to be at the side position unless it is with another vowel, and not the schwa sound.. A strong /U/ sound is typed. All vowels alone are understood to have the _//// hand pointing to them as in Cued Speech, but we need not type it in Nu-Script. The Diphthongs are written as arrows and/or (: ) and ( .. ) in NVC.
Example: ( _//// m // m ) ( _//// m // m ) ( turkey _//// m // m) (fever _////m//m)
# = used for transition to a number chart
Color codes 1 = red, 2 = blue, 3= yellow, 4 = orange 5 = green OR = red = blue = yellow = orange = green Two years after I developed Nu-Vue-Cue, I read in the Instructional Magazine about the UNIFON (trademark) Alphabet by John Malone. For students in my classroom it was easier to use than the Conventional Phonetic Alphabet. Later I took the alphabets off the boards and used only the symbols of the 8 hands and 4 positions plus diphthongs so students would not learn to spell phonetically . They memorized placements of sounds. They used the NVC boards for Conventional Spelling and for Math skills development. The green Guidelines Book gives explanations of Nu-Vue-Cue .
