NYNJERCKS: C.S.I.
Circumnavigate Staten Island
NYNJERCKS takes to the water this year on Saturday, June 17th for a two-day, 40 mile trip to Circumnavigate Staten Island. We'll be leaving from Liberty State Park in Jersey City and heading south into the open water of New York Harbor. A departure from the traditional security of slow moving rivers, the NYNJERCKS will be entering some potentially difficult waters to raise awareness for our Endangered Urban Rivers: the Arthur Kill, Kill Van Kull and the Hudson River.
The overnight trip will take us down the Kill Van Kull, through the Arthur Kill, around the tip of Staten Island, back up through the Narrows, and ultimately through New York Harbor back to Liberty State Park.
Due to the nature of this trip, we are forced to limit participation to experienced kayakers who possess appropriate equipment.
No kayaks under 14' long or canoes will be allowed, PFDs and sprayskirts are absolutely mandatory, and all craft must be equipped with a stern light for nighttime operation. We will be travelling quickly to maximize the use of the currents and to avoid getting swept out to sea! For safety, the pod will be sheparded by motorized vessels provided by the NY/NJ Baykeeper and Raritan Riverkeeper.
