The New York/New Jersey Endangered River Canoe and Kayak Squad, or "9 Jerks," is a group of paddlers from the New York metropolitan area who attempt to raise awareness for threatened rivers of the region. The group includes biologists, educators, artists, and environmental specialists from Federal, State and county governments and local non-profit organizations who paddle the entire length of rivers that are impaired or underappreciated.
The group first came together to paddle New Jersey's Passaic River in May 2003. Over 3 days, NYNJERCKS travelled nearly 80 miles, camped out in river-side towns, and even appeared on the nightly news. More than 25 paddlers took part in the tour. In May 2004, we took on 60 miles of the Raritan River's South Branch (and portaged our brains out!). Last year the JERCKS 'yakked the Hack, the Hackensack River that is.
