The Oakes Family of North Carolina and Tennessee

Oakes Family 1940's


It is believed by many that the Oaks families represented here are descendents of an Irish immigrant named Joshua Oaks of Wilkes Co., NC. Others suggest the families are related to Daniel Oaks that settled in Carter County, Tn or Lodewick Oaks of Burke County, NC.

Oaks Generation 1

David Oaks b. 1782 m. Sophia Davis b. 1795
Children: Jeremiah b. 1819 / Nehemiah b. 1828 / David b.1830 / Rebecca b. 1836

Governor James K. Polk of Tennessee granted David Oaks land in 1839 for his military service. The property was located in Carter County, Tn. David was shot and killed in 1863 when bushwhackers raided his farm during the Civil War.

Oaks Generation 2

Jeremiah Oaks m. Martha Franklin b. 1820
Children: William b. 1852 / Wilson b. 1854 / Elizabeth b. 1857 / Nancy b. 1859 / Isaiah b. 1861

Jeremiah served in the Union in the Company B 13th Regiment of the Tennessee Calvary Volunteers. He enrolled on January 21, 1864 and mustered into service on February 6, 1864. Jeremiah died at Knoxville, Tn and is buried in the Veterans Cemetery in Knoxville, Tn.
