Welcome to my site! First let me tell you a little about myself. My name is Chad and I live here in the great state of Maine. A short time ago I became interested in metal detecting. I would see those adds on T.V. and think, "Humm...that looks fun, I wonder if I could find anything around here?" After looking around the internet for a time I finally decided....Yes! I'll take a chance and spend some of my hard earned money.
I must admit some of my family and friends started to give me some funny looks when I told them of this new hobby of mine. Those funny looks didn't last long however, when I started to show them some of the TREASURES I found. Oh, when it first comes out of the ground they don't look nice, but when it's cleaned up....OH BOY! There is a special excitement unearthing a coin or ring that hasn't seen the light of day in over a hundred years. Often the coin will be crusted with the dust of ages past, sometimes badly enough that you can't tell what it is until you clean it up. It could be a button lost by a farmer long ago, or a token from a long forgotten circus, but whatever it is, it is a valuable link to our past! I'll admit a little secret...I always hope I'll find a very rare coin that would be worth some money.
I have been lucky enough to find some nice coins and jewelry already, and was busy digging along a beach when a nice lady came up to me and asked if I could help her find her keys. She showed me where her towel had been laid out and where her purse was. What happened was, in getting her towel, cooler, kids toys and little ones ready to go back to the car, her purse spilled out and she didn't notice that her keys wasn't in it. "No problem" I said, and with a couple of sweeps of my metal detector I found where the keys were, laying 2 inches under the sand.
It was on the ride home that day that I wondered, what would have happened if I wasn't right there? If she had a spare set in the car a locksmith could have opened the door for her, but they are expensive! And it's not only keys that get lost, but also rings and jewelry of all kinds. A locksmith couldn't help you if you are playing tennis and that bracelet goes flying, or you was wading in the water with your kids and a ring comes off.
Interesting note on why this happens- the water in Maine is COLD! The temperature difference between the air and water is enough that your fingers "shrink" a tiny bit. This, unfortunately, is why a lot of people lose rings in the water.
Anyways, back to the point of the story, people lose stuff all the time. Unless you have a buddy with a metal detector, chances are that engagement ring or family heirloom brooch is lost. Or, it was until now. Now, you have an option you didn't before. Now you can Call or Email me at Red Dwarf Metal Detecting.
