NOTTINGHAM MARINE BIOLOGY
STUDENT AWARDS
MICHAEL KOVACS / ENVIRONMENTAL AWARD
Presented to the student at Nottingham High School who best demonstrates an immense concern for our environment and/or actively is involved in protecting our terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. (The student does not have to be enrolled in Freshwater/Marine Biology and Ecology to be the recipient of this award.)
ABOUT MICHAEL KOVACS Mike Kovacs taught Biology, Earth Science, and Physical Science at Nottingham High School for 30 years until he retired in 1997. Mike was a mentor to Mr. Gilbert and was influential in the Ecology curriculum. Mike's knowledge of and love for the environment has been an inspiration for many students who have attended Nottingham. Mike was responsible for beginning the annual canoe trip down the Oswego back in the sixties. Mike now resides in Nevada where he hikes the great National Parks of the west.

1999 Environmental Award Winner, Nina Hupp, now is an active environmentalist in her new home state of Hawaii. Here Nina and Mr. Gilbert reunite at the 2005 NMEA Conference in Maui.
DAVE LATINI / GPA AWARD
Presented to the student enrolled in Freshwater/Marine Biology & Ecology who achieved the highest grade point average for the year.
ABOUT DAVE LATINI Dave Latini taught Physical Science at Nottingham for three years until his untimely death in 2000. Dave shared the "Fish Bowl" (room 108) with Mr. Gilbert and they became good friends. Dave took great pride in being a teacher at Nottingham and felt students should be honored for their academic achievements.

BARBARA MUZYK / NORTHSTAR OF THE MONTH
Every month the Nottingham Science Department recognizes one student who performs outstandingly in one of the sciences. The following students have been honored for their accomplishments while enrolled in Freshwater/Marine Biology & Ecology or for their outstanding participation in the Key Largo Field Experience.
ABOUT BARB MUZYK  Barb Muzyk was Nottingham's very first Science chairperson in 1982 and remained the school's only science chair until she retired in 2003. Barbara was the glue that held the science department together. She primarily taught Chemistry and AP Chem but over the years was called upon to teach almost the entire science curriculum. Barb Muzyk became Nottingham's very first "Teacher of the Year" in 1986 and became the standard for all good teachers to be compared.
