Comments about the web site: I just want to thank you for helping get my "hopelessly" stuck oil filter off my camaro. Your invention deserves to be on auto suppliers shevles because the idea works. I would have never thought to use a radiator hose clamp to remove the filter...I tried it and it worked. Thanks for placing your invention on the net. I suspect for every guy like me who sends you a "thank you" 100 guys forget to pass on their thanks. Best Regards, Frank

Comments about the web site: Thank you for your compliment Frank. The Universal Oil Filter Wrench had it's humble beginning in a similar predicament on my wife's '92 Mazda Protege. The oil filter was located in a deep hole in the far back of the engine block. Necessity is the mother of invention. By the way, the oil filter on her 2000 Mazda Protege is located in the exact same place! Oh well.

Comments about the web site: Unfortunately Jeff, the Universal Oil Filter Wrench isn't for sale at this time. As soon as I can gather enough interest in the UOFW, and complaints of existing oil filter wrenches, I'll make a new presentation to several tool companies. Thanks for your inquiry and I'll contact you if there any new developments.

Comments about the web site: I have a 2001 Mazda Protege with a filter that is hard enough to find, let alone remove. I cannot remove the filter with a band-style or cupped filter wrench. A gorilla must have put the original filter on. I prefer to do the work myself, as I need an oil change every month and a half. I just can't see paying $28 for and oil and filter change at the local quick-lube for a $3 oil filter and 3.2 quarts of oil.

Comments about the web site: Thanks Ron for adding your comment to my guest book. The Universal Oil Filter Wrench has gone beyond being merely a product on paper and is quite real. It has also been tested and used by several local area auto mechanics and other DIY's who were surprised by it's effectiveness, and also asked the question, "When will it be available?" Unfortunately, the cost of independently mas producing any product (in order to reduce the per item price for the consumer) is extremely high. My personal monies are currently being allocated toward funding the patent cost of another new product idea. It has been my intention to find an established tool manufacturer to produce and distribute the Universal Oil Flilter Wrench in exchange for a royalty. Most tool manufacturers are reluctant to accept "outside" improvement ideas for a variety of reasons. One of them is that large businesses receive so many worthless and off-the-wall new product ideas, the occasional good one tends to get overlooked...requiring some extra effort on the inventor to get it noticed. Thus the purpose of my web sites, and in particular, the necessity of gathering as many complaints as possible to illustrate the dissatisfaction of current oil filter wrenches. So, to answer your question Ron...I really don't know exactly when the UOFW will be available on market shelves. However, I have received quite a few encouraging e-mails since the publication of my web sites that have prompted me to "get things going" again.

Unfortunately it isn't available for the general consumer until I can find an established tool manufacturer to mass produce and distribute it in order to keep the cost to you and everyone else as low as possible. I'm keeping your address along with the many others who have E-mailed me requesting how to get the UOFW. I will personally notify you and those on my "A list" when the UOFW goes into manufacture.

Comments about the web site: Hello Edward I am a mechanic and your invention is pretty good. Just the extensive instruction would qualify it as an excellent product. Your first market should be the professionals not the DIYs. This is because only professionals would consider the investment necessary for such a product. I work in the field and have many ideas about tools myself. If you ever wanted someone to test your wrench in the field (I work on cars at peoples residences) let me know and I will be glad to do it. Email me and I would be glad to tell me more about what I think of your wrench and what features the professionals look for. But the wrench you have made is pretty good already.

Comments about the web site: Well I got tired of throwing my money away on all sorts of wrenches which DO NOT get the oil filter off of my S-10 2.5L 4 cylinder. The last one cost me $12 and it simply slipped...not gripped and it quickly resided in my trash can! In frustration I took a 16 inch screwdriver which has seen better days(DAZE?) and punched a hole at the lowest point of the filter to let it drain. I then drove the screwdriver through the filter body and had enough space to twist the filter loose.RESULTS!I haven't felt that strong for a while. Actually as the filter sits at an angle at the side of the engine usually the oil inside the filter would drop all over the floor and the front suspension...now it is the neatest job of changing oil I have done in years! So perhaps I have found Nirvana or else I am tired of looking. Recycling at its best. Signed ,Alan in West Palm Beach "Punchy" Best to all.. NNNN

Comments about the web site: The UOFW looks like it has some promise. I'm not real sure it would work for my application, so I'll mention it. I have a 1999 Dodge with the Cummins Diesel motor. The oil filter once installed has almost no clearance below it. I can barely get a 1" wide band-type filter wrench on it. I have to come from the side at sort of an angle. Do you feel your design would work where there is marginal clearance below the filter. It seems like it would work well in cases where a person has space to come from below, but with the Cummins I don't have that space below.

Comments about the web site: Acomplain against the now dead English automobile industry. Back in the late 60s, Triumph made the TR-4 with a cartridge filter that was impossible to change properly without detatching the engine and jacking it either up or down. Of course a man with a torch could cut away a section of the frame to allow removal of the filter element housing, but then the "car" would break into pieces all the sooner !! My solution was to remove the element and insert a new one into the nearly inaccessable dirty housing and juggle it back into place, dirty, time consuming, and not a proper job. My so-called "non-tool" involves knowledge of physics, ergonomics, and properties of the filter sealing ring. And it may not work in every application, the manufacturer must be so kind as to give at least 50mm clearence for the man to grip the unit.. Adrian the madman

Comments about the web site: I really love my 94 Toyota 4wd PU with 22re engine but ... ... they put the oil filter and fuel filter under the fuel injection intake manifold. This is an extremely difficult location under the best of conditions, but with air conditioning it's virtualy impossible to access! I have tried a number of filter wrenches, the old band type I have works great on my ol' Chevy, but not for the small diameter and confined spaces of my Toyota. I finally ended up using an old nylon dog coller with stragicly placed short screwdriver for leverage to get my last filter tightened. To get a filter off, the only way I could do it was to drive a long rod through the filter then use a short screwdriver in the hole I made to get it loose. You're probably laughing right now, but there just wasn't any way that filter was comming off unless I went to such extremes! Now I know why the oil was on the dirty side when I bought the truck used, even the Toyota dealership didn't change it! I for one, am ready for a Universal Oil Wrench, bring it on, the job may still be somewhat difficult (even with your invention), but at least it will be possible! I wish you luck and success! Comments about the web site: Thank you Chad for your descriptive problem of removing the oil filter from your "99 Dodge. To answer your question as if the Universal Oil Filter Wrench (UOFW) would work in our situation...more than likely. The multiple hinges of the UOFW will allow it to compress itself to width of just under 1 inch, that is, using the model that doesn't include the "elevated hex component" designed for an adjustable wrench, etc. The only requirement is if there is additional space somewhere around the filter where you can slip your hand in to tighten the thumbscrew adjustment of the band clamp. Again, thank you for submitting your comment to my guestbook. Steve

Comments about the web site: I hav eto be honest with you, I found this page after a bout with a stubborn filter. I sent my wife out to get ma a filter wrench after I destroyed the on on the car. It turned out that the standard "band type is the one she got for me. Well by this time I had it, I am by most accord a very mellow and patient person( I have a 5 year old!) I found my self taking the wrench and launching it across the street!!! I drove a screwdriver through the filter and told my self I would never let someone else do the oil change. I felt that godzilla was te one who put it on!! As the screwdriver came through the other side I was able to get enough turns to finish by hand. I was to say the least not a happy camper!!! Well thats my story. Oh and I know Saturn says that the car was desgined for the average person but I am here to tell you that Is not true!!! Thank you for your time and have a great day!!

Comments about the web site: Steve, Fell upon your site during a search of oil filter wrenches. Very interesting! I read your guest book and noticed that there are a couple entries complaining about oil filter removal on Harley Davidsons. I too own a Harely, a 2001 Dayna Wide Glide. Before that, I had owned over 19 other various brands of motorcycles. Consequently, through the course of time, I had accumulated quite a collection of oil filter wrenches. So, when I bought the Harley, I figured I'd be well covered in the oil filter wrench department. Was I ever wrong. A "constant" complaint among the Harley newsgroups, websites and clubs is the problem of removing the oil filter. Harley sells a wrench that is "supposed" to make the process easier but the general consensus is that it's not any better than any other method used. The major problem with accessing the filter is that it's very close to the engine casing, is partially blocked by a bank angle sensor and, being a motorcylce filter, small in diameter. Add all of those problems together and a routine oil change can take over an hour to accomplish. A task that shouldn't take more than 10-15 minutes tops. Every oil filter wrench I've seen for motorcycles have been nothing more than smaller variations of their automotive wrench and doesn't address the specific problems inherent in removing oil filters on motorcycles. I looked at your design and your website makes a convincing argument that it would be a very effective tool in oil filter removal. If this is true, I think you would have a strong market share in the motorcycle industry. Your wrench would seem to be an ideal solution for the removal of smaller, crammped and more delicate oil filters used on motorcyles...especially Harley Davidsons. However, I've seen more variations of oil filter wrenches that I can shake a stick at. Each one touting to be the ultimate answer to the age old problem of oil filter removal. Consequently, I remain skeptical that your product is any better than evey other method/tool I've used. I would be very interested to know when you plan to market this product. I see comments from you dating to early last year? If you "do" plan on having resellers for your product, I'd be interested in providing a way for you to distribute your porduct within the motorcycle industry, that is of course, if the product works as promised. Anyway, I just thought I'd pass along that your product seems well thought out and the web site gives a good idea how effective it can be, but like I mentioned, I think your're missing a huge untouched market in the motorcycle industry. Maybe including some pictures of how it can be used to remove motorcyle filters would generate more interest from those in the motorcycle industry? Regards, -aki Herndon, Va.

Comments about the web site: This is a "special" note to everyone viewing the guestbook. Several of the above comments were sent to me as a personal email rather than placing it directly to this guestbook. With the kind permission of the "email" senders, I've copied their comments in its entirety for everyone to see. All email responses will be personally answered, and will "not" be added to the guestbook until I have your specific permission. Fortunately, all of my email has been positive and very supportive...and I do thank you! Many of you have asked when the Universal Oil Filter Wrench (UOFW) will be available. Until the sluggish stock market improves, most large businesses with the funding to finance and produce "new" ideas are hunkering down to weather out the storm. Your comments expressing the difficulty you're having with current oil filter wrenches can "spread the waters" for tool companies to see how inadaquate available oil filter wrenches really are. The UOFW can prove itself...if given a chance. Looking forward to your complaints and comments. Sincerely, Steve Edwards

Comments about the web site: I'm trying to change the oil in my Honda CRV. I now own 4 different types of oil filter wrenches, none of which fit the genuine Honda filter. Since 3 of them do fit the replacement filter I can only conclude that Honda has intentionally installed a nonstandard filter size to discourage me from changing my own oil - or to sell me an expensive special tool.

Comments about the web site: I just changed my oil for the first time in several years. I used to avoid changing the oil filter and would simply change the oil on my own every other time and let a "pro" do it the others so the filter would be changed every 7500 miles. I decided, however, that I like changing the oil and why not do the filter as well. Well. Easier said that done. First I bought one of those "cap" style wrenches. Looks cool, would seem to work as I've got to up and over the drive shaft on my Honda and it would work perfectly with a socket wrench. I couldn't get at the filter with a Universal style so this was the only option. Problem 1: the cap style didn't fit my Honda OEM filter. Had to go back to the store and buy another wrench. This time I was instructed by the store rep to basically "crush" the current filter as this would be my only option due to the angle I had to attack the filter from. The wrench was essestially a big offset pliers. Cost me $12. Problem 2: Once I removed the filter putting the new one on seemed pretty simple. Screw it on until snug and then grab the cap style and crank away. Not so quick. The cap style just kept slipping and I couldn't get any leverage. I crushed my hand about four times before I finally got the filter tight enough to stop it from dripping. Your tool looks like the answer to my nightmares. Where can I get one? And, good luck!

Comments about the web site: I really agree with that but I recommend you to try the better one. It is universal one too. I found it was sold at Autozone only. The price is $7.00. I forgot the name. It is a machanice tool. Trying it, you will feel better about wrench. Good luck

Comments about the web site: Dan, The Universal Oil Filter Wrench (UOFW) isn't available for sale just yet, still looking or a tool company to manufacture it. For the time being, I'm waiting for the economy to pick up a little before I go knocking on a few company doors. I've had some inquires from a few foreign businesses, but I'd prefer to stay USA. Comments about the web site: While your idea looks great, I have a Pontiac Transport Minivan, and the Filter is up and under some annoying hoses. Now, you may say, hey this WOMAN doesn't know what she's talking about, well you're right :) I have come to realize that if I wait for my Husband to get his butt up off his recliner to fix the problems with my vehicle, I'll be old and grey, not to mention hoarse from nagging him, before he even makes an attempt to go near my van. Anywho... I really just wanted to say that your idea looks pretty promising, and being a Woman trying to learn how to fix her own van, I would buy it (if i could figure out how to get around all of the junk to the filter. :)

Comments about the web site: Give me five minutes in the ring with the crash test dummy at GM who designed the oil filter location on the K-series trucks. "Oh, uhmmm let's see... let's put it in the 4 inch slot above the transfer case underneath the exhaust manifold!" If you market your wrench, everyone who owns a K-Series truck will happily buy one. Thanks

Comments about the web site: Hi, my name is Andrew...I'm 17...trying to be an auto technician/mechanic when I get out of high school. So right now I'm making a point of changing my oil. The last time my oil was changed, it was done by a trustworthy shop. However, they tightened the oil filter way too tight. No matter which way I try to turn it by hand (a lost cause indeed), it won't budge--not a single centimeter. There is a small bit of clearing around the oil filter where I can slip the wrench around the filter...but there is simply no clearance to turn it, the problem that you talked about! The wrench simply won't grip on tight enough. I was in the middle of changing my oil when this problem came up. So as I am typing this, my car has no oil in it and the filter just won't come out. I normally keep my speech clean, but when I was trying to get the filter to budge just a tiny bit, I found myself cursing and very frustrated. As I sat there, arms aching from futile laboring, I envisioned the very device you came up with: The Universal Oil Filter Wrench. It looked a bit different in my mind, but, the idea was the same: it should clamp TIGHTLY around the outside of the filter and have some sort of L-shaped bar that fits into the socket, long enough to work on it and not have to bend over, and thereby use a lot of torque to get the filter out. But there really is no Universal Oil Filter Wrench to buy, is there? How long are parts companies going to force us home mechanics to use tools from the Stone Age? How long???

Comments about the web site: Oil filter wrenches are not built to deal with the obvious physics-implied swelling of the oil filter due to heat. The one that fits snugly fresh out of the box, doesn't fit at all when you're trying to change the oil.
