Dear Sandy,

Below is my Spring season report; included are sightings from 1 March, through 31 May, 2000. The big event of the spring was moving into a new house about a mile and a half southeast of Luis Lopez (499 Farm-to-Market Road). I moved in the first week of March. I have an acre located about 200 yards west of the river with a couple of fairly narrow strips of bosque and 3 canals/ditches in between (no direct river access, nearest crossing to the river is about 2 miles north). I'm in the process of planting many fruiting trees and bushes and planning on a small pond in the back yard. I averaged a little over 1.5 yardbirds/day up until 15 May when they suddenly ceased and I didn't get a single new yardbird until yesterday (calling fly-by Black-bel Plover on 6/7, bringing my list to 121). I've had about 15 additional species within a mile or so of the house. Had several really good ones as can be seen in the accounts below. In terms of general migration, I added some notes at the end of the report showing numbers of selected migrant passerines which passed through the yard and notes on birds nesting in the area.

I have purposely worked on my yard list, so have not been as extensively on the road this spring as in previous years. May be just as well, seemed to be pretty slow on the eastern plains most of the spring.

The face was dark with a pale whitish edge to the facial skin. This whitish didn't surround the eye, ending directly above and below the eye. The eye was persistently dark, though I did get a brownish glint on a couple of occasions while watching the bird. All the White-faced Ibis bright, obvious reddish/pinkish eyes and many showed obvious pinkish in the facial area with broader white or pinkish feathered edges which totally enclosed the eye. They were viewed with bnoculars and spotting scopt at about 30 yards distance and in good light (they were ENE of me). Both were largish black-headed gulls, sitting partly hidden behind a drift of stones (from my point of view. I immediately realized that they were Laughing Gulls by their large all blood-red bills. Two Franklin's gulls were with Ring-blds. about 20 yards northwest of the birds and showed much shorter, more delicate bills. The edge of the black cap was almost square with the axis of the neck and terminated about the base of the skull (more black on the nape than Bonaparte's and about the same as the Franklin's). While I was looking at other birds, one of the Franklin's took flight and as I was watching, I noted that both Laughing Gulls and done the same, so I got a direct comparison with one of the birds in flight. The Laughing was about 30% larger than the Franklin's and showed no white windows at the wing tips. The underwing showed a blackish tip, grading to pale gray at about the wrist.

The bird flew by my house and circled over the yard and around the field behind the house for several minutes. I watched it with 10X binoculars at distances as close at about 40 ft. A small cheatura swift, very pale below (breast and upper belly) with a whitish throat. Short tail, not notched. Rump contrastingly pale brown, occasionally appearing to have a slight grayish tinge, with black wings and back. The bird did not call. It has been some time since I reviewed the marks for Chimney versus Vaux's Swift, so I did not realize until I looked at the NGS guide a short while later that the pale rump and underparts went with Vaux's Swift.

I was uynable to visually locate the bird as it worked down the stream from the spring. I had to back down on on the ID when, the following week, I had a Borwn-headed Cowbird giving a perfect imitation of the call. The cowbird hung around my yard for the duration of the season and persistently gave the puuureee call.

This bird had been reported the previous day by Dave Hawksworth and I had looked for the bird on the evening of the 1st without success. I got to turtle Bay at about 7 and found the bird at about 8 foraging in the large willow at the south end of the east bay of the pond. I watched and photographed the bird for about a half hour and met PB as I was leaving, returned with her and after a while, relocated the bird. JR and RG and friend then arrived and we all followed the bird around. It was a smallish stubby looking, short-tailed vireo about the size of a Plumbeous Vireo with an olive green face, crown, and nape, yellow lores and eye-ring, yellow throat and breast, white belly and undertail coverts, gray wings, back, and upper tail and two white wingbars. Palm Warbler.(ABE) 1 eastern race (yellow) bird at LLH on 5/8 (video enclosed). This bird was seen in my front yard at Luis Lopez in the early morning. I spotted a movement against the front fence about75 ft. from the house. At first, I thought it was a toad (I had just flooded the yard the day before and there were still puddles around). When I put my binoculars on it, I quickly recognized that it was a Palm Warbler with bright yellow undertail coverts, yellow throat, and constantly pumping tail. I grabbed my video camera and headed out to try for photos. The bird immediatelyt jumped up on a fence line, then up sev eral feet into a Pecan tree. It started calling, a sharp tsip call, as it worked it's way up the back side of the tree. As I rounded the tree, the bird flew into the top of another nearby pecan. I went behind the house where I finally spotted the bird and got a short video clip. The bird then flew off toward the back fence and I lost it (I could not pick it's call out from those of several orientha White-cr. sparrows in that area which were amazingly similar.)

The bird was a medium sized warbler, brownish above and yellow below with some streaking on the breast. It had a fairly notable and wide pale eyeline. I was never close enough or in the right light to see the crown color other than dark. The bird constantly pumped it's tail and gave a bright tsip call note. This is my third Palm Warbler for NM and the first one of the eastern race.

Photo log

As usual, I have included several types of photos to help document records. The slides are duplicates and need not be returned. Any slides were taken with ASA-400 film (Ectachrome Elite 400) with auto speed setting using Nikon N6006 body and Nikor 500 mm mirror lens with a fixed stop of f/8. Video footage was taken with a Canon ES-5000 camera using the sports setting (1/250 sec. exposure with auto stopping). Digital imagery was produced with a Sony Mavica F-91 digital still camera. It sports a 14:1 optical zoom capability for effective focal lengths of moderately wide angle to over 500 mm equivalent(~10X) magnification. Exposure is typically automatic and not recorded. Digital resolution is typically left at the default setting (1024 fine resolution) As with the video camera, I can mate it up to my Kowa scope or binoculars to get an effective focal length of several meters.

Other interesting things

Two bats were investigating the crawl space above the carport at my place in Luis Lopez on 3/27-4/1.

1 Weasel (presumably long-tailed) at LLH on 6/1.

Luis Lopez house spring notes. I moved into the house the first week of March and spent most of the week and occasional weekends there during the spring period. Below is a synopsis of selected migrants, nesters, and visitors seen in the yard from 3/1-5/31/00.

N. Parula Warbler - 1
Lucy's Warbler - 1
Virginia's Warbler - 5
Yellow-r. Warbler - 18 (some of these may be repeats)
Yellow Warbler - 4
Palm Warbler - 1
Plumbeous Vireo - 5
Com. Yellowthroat - 1 (evidently nesting in the bosque across the road)
Wilson's Warbler - 13
Orange-cr. Warbler - 3
Western Tanager - 4

The Ash-throated Flycatcher, Summer Tanager, Chats and Yellowthroat appear to be nesting in the bosque across the road from the house. Also nesting in the yard and/or in the lot next door are Phainopepla (2-3 pair), Bewick's Wren, Western Kingbird, Robin, Black Phoebe, Say's Phoebe, House Sparrow, House Finch, Barn Swallow, N. Mockingbird, and Black-ch. Hummingbird. Consistent visitors undoubtedly nesting in the area include Lesser Goldfinch, Black-hdd. and Blue Grosbeaks, Rough-w. Swallow, Cooper's Hawk, Com. Yellowthroat, W. Meadowlark, Red-w. Blackbird. There are consistently 4-8 Brown-hdd. Cowbirds in the area. 3-4 orientha White-cr. Sparrows hung around through the first of June.

I am going through about 60 oz. of hummingbird food a day. So far, only very short visits by 1 Rufous and 1 Broad-tld. All others have been Black-ch.
