Dr. Sartor O. Williams III Dear Sandy, Included below is my report for the Summer season. The report covers sightings from 1 June, 1997 through 31 July, 1997. Heard from Pat that you have hurt your back. Hope you're getting better. I stopped for gas in Santa Fe a couple of weeks ago. While handing over my card, I noted a photo in the window and thought it looked a lot like you. On closer inspection, it was. Congratulations on being the first winner of what ever it was you won. At least I know where I can find you on gas-up day! It was actually an interesting season in spite of being summer. Hilights included the Pacific Loon, Winter Wren and Red Phalarope to start the summer. With Arctic Tern at Monticello Point and Common Ground Dove near Cliff, both on the 4th of July weekend. Too bad the tern didn't stick around for Louis on Saturday. At least I got to show the dove to John and parents. The Long-bld. Thrasher was present, quite easy, and still in song at the end of July. To cap off the summer, besides the thrasher, we also had what I assume is the state's third Collared Dove in Ft. Sumner at the end of the season. By the way, Louis said that Joe Sandburg got better photos of the Collared Dove he had in his back yard before it departed a couple of months ago. I'll try to get him to submit them.

It was heavy overcast and moderate rain, but reasonable viewing conditions in the wind/rain shadow of the pump house on the seasonal tour road. The bird was a phalarope, swimming and picking at the surface in typical phalarope fashion. The bill was fairly thick, and mostly yellow with a black tip. Crown was dark. The face was paler and somewhat mottled. The chin, throat, and breast were dark red. The back was blackish/buffy streaked (probably buffy edges to the back feathers/scapulars). Arctic Tern (ABE). 1 breeding plumaged adult at EBMP on 7/3 (photos enclosed). This bird was first seen as I turned onto the road down the side of Monticello Bay to the point (at about 7 p.m.). I stopped and watched it with a scope as it foraged over the middle of Monticello Bay. While it was distant, I could clearly see the gray belly and grayish throat with the contrasting white cheek, stubby looking bill, narrow black trailing edge to the under primaries, and uniform gray upper wing surface with a trace of black trailing edge to the primaries and a narrow white trailing edge to the secondaries. The bird worked it's way toward the main body of the lake and I drove on down to the spit at the point. There was 30-50 Ft. of pebbly spit. Campers were packed right up to the base of the spit. After a short period, the Tern flew by and inspected the spit area, worked the nearby waters for a while, then finally came in to land on the spit and spent 20-30 minutes preening and loafing before taking off again and moving south over the bay. The first flyby gave good looks at the bird, confirming at close range the marks seen through the scope and including the all blood-red bill. I took 2-3 series of photos of the bird in flight. When it lit, I was able to approach to within about 15 ft. without disturbing the bird and added almost two more rolls of slides to those already taken as the bird preened and rested. Forster's Tern. 1 at Stubblefield Lake on 7/19. 3 at BAR on 7/20. 1 on the Cibola end of Bluewater Lake on 7/27. Black Tern. 1 at EBMP on 6/28. 3 at MR lake#12 on 7/19. 1 at Chukse Lake on 7/27. Sumner on 7/26 (with JP, photo enclosed). The bird was seen perching and moving around in the top of a dead tree just east of 14th street and along the main highway through Ft. Sumner. The bird was a large pale tan dove, between a White-w. Dove and Rock Dove in size. It had a narrow black collar on the sides of the neck. At one point it flew to a different branch and I was clearly able to see the undrertail area. There was a dark brown triangular patch on either side of the dusky undertail coverts. The lower half of the retricies were white rather than pale tan, with a sharp cutoff at the proximal end of the white feather ends. The bird called once, giving a co-COO-coo call. Common Ground Dove (ABE). 1 singing bird seen and heard at NM-293/mp4 on 7/4 (with J,M,&SP). The bird was persistently singing (once I coaxed ti with whistled calls) about 30-50 yeard to the north of the road. We eventually managed to tape it out into view at about 75 ft. with a scope. The bird was a typical male with a scaly blue-gray head, bicolored lower mandible, and scaly breast. Yellow-bld. Cuckoo (ABE). 1 at Riverside on 7/4. 1 at MR on 7/19. Barn Owl (ABE).
