Dear Sandy,

Given below are my sightings from 1 August-30 November, 2002.  I have included the video of the Prothonotary Warbler at Bosque del Apache since it was first found in the fall season.

In some respects, this seemed like a very slow season but, as usual, when I review the birds seen I realize there was quite a good number and variety of vagrants.  Highlights included my second state bird of the year, Roseate Spoonbill at Bitter Lake.  Others included multiple Ruddy Ground Doves (including one in my yard!), Common Ground Doves, Reddish Egrets, Tricolored Herons, out-of-range Zone-tld. Hawks, Red Knots, Blue-hdd. Vireos, Black-thtd. Green Warblers, Hermit Warbler, Palm Warblers, and Lawrence's Goldfinches, and singles of Red-n. Grebe, Yellow-cr. Night Heron, Rufous-backed Robin, Surf Scoter, Short-bld. Dowitcher, Laughing Gull, Yellow-thtd Warbler, Black-thtd. Blue Warbler and Golden-cr. Sparrow.

Stellar's Jay mounted a massive lowland invasion starting at  mid September.  By the end of the period I had seen these Jays in lowland Torrance, lowland Socorro, lowland Sierra, lowland Luna, lowland Colfax, Guadalupe, DeBaca, Roosevelt, Quay, and Harding counties, leaving only Curry and Lea as missing county ticks for the species (I'll hopefully pick these up this winter).  This is not to mention a count of up to 28 on the ground in my yard at Luis Lopez.  Pinion and Scrub Jays and White-breasted Nuthatches (completed a county wipe-out with two birds at Nara Visa), were also widespread on the eastern plains.  Clark's Nutcrackers at Cistern Saddle near Animas Peak were a Hidalgo County treat.

John notes that I began the winter season with warbler #36 for the year (Prothonotary at BAR), a new record for NM.  This is primarily due to a rather spectacular warbler spring, as the fall season seemed rather slow for warblers.  I managed to make it through the year without seeing Kentucky, Worm-eating, Tennessee, or Blue-winged Warblers as the most likely adds.

Roseate Spoonbill (ABE).    1 immature at BLR on 8/14 (vt enclosed).  The bird had been found in the morning by Gordon Warrick who sent out the notification via e-mail.  I arrived at Bitter Lake at about 1:30 and drove straight to unit 16 where the bird was seen foraging and loafing with several Snowy Egrets.  The bird was in an opening in the rushes and was only partly visible for a while, and was able to disappear in the rushes for 10-15 minutes without being seen.  It finally moved to the center of the open area and started preening and loafing.  I was able to study and video tape the bird in good light (bird was northeast of me) at a distance of about 100 meters with a scope and binoculars.  The bird was an immature, possibly a 2nd year bird with an all white (feathered) head, neck, and breast, and moderately pale pink wings, belly, and leg coverts (not very pale pink as in a first year bird).  It was similarly proportioned to but notably larger than the nearby Snowy Egrets and White-faced Ibis, probably a little shorter than a Great Egret.  The bill was spatulate, with a pink distal half and a grey proximal half. The eye was dark and the leg color could not be well seen due to the glare of the sunlight, legs were darkish (horn??).  The bird was seen feeding by sweeping it's bill from side to side avocet style.  I am familiar with Roseate Spoonbill and have seen them in California, Mexico, Texas, and Florida.

Red Knot (ABE).    1 well advanced into basic plumage at EBMP on 9/2 (vt enclosed).  Seen with binoculars and a spotting scope at distances as close as 150 ft. with peeps, phalaropes, and Gr. Yellowlegs.  The bird was much larger than the peeps and phalaropes.  At first I thought that this bird looked scaly and was in juvenile plumage, but after noting that there was still some red in the cheeks and throat, I noted that the scapulars and coverts were simply pale edged and had no dark sub-terminal band, so the bird was an adult nearly molted into basic plumage.  The bird was plain gray above, paler below with some mottling (pale edges) on the scaps and coverts.  The bill was black and relatively short and thick.  There was an indistinct pale eyeline and a dark eye.  The legs were relatively short, giving the bird an overall dumpy look (rather like a surfbird, but even dumpier).  In flight the upper tail was gray and there was a dark leading edge to the wing, darkest at the wrist and  fading out about half way back to the body.  There was a large pale wing stripe visible in flight.

1 in juvenile plumage at Brantley Lake on 9/8 (vt enclosed).  The basic description for the body size, shape, and coloration same as for the bird above.  Primary difference noted was that the coverts were fresh and showed a thin dark (blackish) sub-terminal band between the body of the feather and the pale edge, giving the bird a very scaly appearance.

Sanderling (ABE).    1 at Brantley Lake on 9/7.  1 at Tramway and 2nd in Albuquerque on 9/17 had been previously reported.  5 at BLR on 9/30 (with JD, JV).

Stilt Sandpiper.    6 at Sumner Lake on 8/24 (with JP).

Short-bld. Dowitcher (ABE).    1 at Sumner Lake on 9/7 (with JP, WW, vt enclosed) had been found the previous day.  Seen with a scope and photographed at about 100 yards distance.  The bird showed bright, wide rufous edges to the back and covert feathers, had a whitish belly with a bright rufous breast, relatively short bill (there were also 2 Long-blds in the area).  It called once (tu-tu-tu) when flying by.

Long-bld. Dowitcher.    About 400 at South Monticello Point on 10/19.  2 at Turn on 11/7.

Arctic Tern (ABE).    4-5 highly probable birds at Sumner Lake on 8/23 (vt enclosed).  I was never 100% on these birds because of the late evening light (it was just before sunset), distance, and sustained strong winds, however, the birds showed a very dark breast and sharply contrasting white cheek. The bills were dark and all red.  In flight, I could see the restricted black along the trailing edge of the under wing (but have always had trouble deciding whether it was narrow enough to be Arctic versus Common).  The birds all unfortunately got up and flew down river before I had a chance to tape them through the scope.

Common Tern (ABE).    About 12 at Sumner Lake on 8/23 (the birds can be heard calling in the background on the Arctic Tern vt).  1 at Lake Avalon on 9/15.  2 at Sumner Lake on 10/12-13.

1+ at LLH on 9/12 (around 5 a.m.).  The screech owl was giving a screech call that I have heard previously from this bird (and it eventually gave the bouncing ball call).  The + was a second bird giving a similar sounding screech call from the bosque about 200 yards south of my house.  While the pitch and timbre of the Screech Owl (in the bosque 200 yards north of my house) was normal, the pitch was much lower for this second bird and the timbre was much drier.  I went in to get my camera and binoculars to chase this second bird down and when I came out it gave a couple of calls sounding very much like a Flammulated Owl.  Unfortunately, a Great Horned Owl started calling from the same direction, apparently near the second bird and it shut up not to be heard again.  (Taping produced no response).

3 at Dunnegan's Crossing (NM338/mp41) on 11/29 (with JP, WW).

Western Flycatcher.    1 at the Tatum sewage ponds from 9/30-10/2 (with JD, JV, vt enclosed). I did not get anything but brief glimpses of the bird on the 30th.  JV and JD got good looks at the bird and JD thought it was a Yellow-bellied Flycatcher.  They indicated that the bird had a complete fairly uniform eye-ring, very dark primaries, and a yellow belly and throat, all good marks for Yellow-bellied and poor marks for Western.  The light completely failed and we spent the night at Lovington and returned on the morning of 10/1.  It was sunny with scattered clouds and stiff breezes.  We again got reasonably brief looks at the bird, which at that time looked lot more like a Western Flycatcher ("broken" eye-ring).  Jon was much more equivocal after seeing the bird, feeling that he could not verify all of his observations from the previous evening.  We left at about 10 and headed north to drop off the Jon and John at Raton.  I spent the night at Springer and drove back to Tatum on the morning of 10/2.  I arrived at about 8 and found the bird almost immediately, still looking much like a Western Flycatcher with a broken eye-ring, peaked crown, and brownish primaries.  I got several good video sequences, since the bird finally became cooperative and perched and foraged out in the open with the sun at my back.  At around 11, I noted that the bird seemed to gain a complete eye-ring, and darkened primaries.  I got additional video of the bird in this condition and finally tried specifically to photograph the wing formula.  This took too much power on the scope and camera and I couldn't get sharp pictures, so I simply looked at the primaries through the scope and drew the at rest primary pattern (enclosed along with a copy of the wing pattern drawing from Matt Heindel's Birder's Journal article).

Waterthrush or Amer. Pipit.   It then took flight, ending up in the large tree about 300 or so yards north of the trap and was not seen again.
