     Welcome to Old Hollow Tree

Running faster and harder
and further away
toward death in the woods
where most ten year olds play.
I cried and I ran
'till I fell to my knees
and I yelled out a pain-filled
 "HOW COME?  WHY ME?"
I didn't want answers.
I knew there were none.
This was where I was ending;
I was where it was done.
I jumped and was startled
for tensions were high,
dropped my passport to heaven
and started to cry.
...And I heard the tree say,
"I don't want you to die"

..."We're alike, you and I,
we have pain deep inside,
and it's eating us up,
leaving scars we can't hide.
Sit beneath me and listen.
Absorb the stillness that's here.
Imagine filling me up
with your pain and your fear."

                              ARMOR   by Lisa J. Wilkins

There's one little girl on a battlefeild,
scrounging and searching for weapons to wield.
Preparing herself for the dreaded attack,
her enemy's gone now, but soon he'll be back.
The battlefield's empty, she's fighting no more,
the enemy retreated, just walked out the door.
She wasn't recruited or drafted, it seems,
she was invaded; awakened from dreams.
A young little mind all alone in the silence,
trying to rationalize all of this violence.
Filled with confusion, overflowing with pain,
this child's just a link in a very long chain.
Drawing strength from those places that somehow were spared,
mourning the loss of things stolen, not shared.
Tears stain the pillow as they burn from her eyes,
and part of a five year old girl slowly dies.
Treasures and virtues ripped from her core,
left beaten and battered; emotionally poor
...thus, all the armor the little girl wore.
