The unlettered version of Bachmann's nifty On30 railtruck comes with an unpainted cast metal cab. Disassembly and preparations needed to paint that cab could present a bit of a puzzle ... but now the puzzle is solved! Our thanks to On30 modeler and author Allen Littlefield, whose written instructions inspired these illustrated pages. Finished model shown with our #381 Rambling Roadrunner conversion kit, inspired by On30 modeler and manufacturer Don Kralik.

Getting it out of the box -- Inside the familiar green Bachmann box, you'll find this clear plastic nest. To open, slide the inner clamshell box from the clear outer sleeve as shown in first photo. Remove the two small parts packets in the top of the inner box and set those aside. Lift the tab in the upper corner as shown in second photo and open as shown in third photo.
Test run your railtruck before you begin disassembly!

Removing plastic stakes -- There are three plastic stake assemblies press-fit into the stake pockets. To remove the rear piece, lift and work loose from the stake pockets. To remove the side pieces, insert a chisel blade or small screwdriver between the cab and stakes to release the pin into the back of cab (see photo), then lift and work loose.

And then the tricky part -- In order to remove the cab, it is necessary to remove the toolbox (which hides the DCC decoder) and also necessary to open the differential and remove the driveshaft, which covers the cab screw. The steps are not terribly difficult, but you will be working with tiny parts -- so use caution! Work in a brightly lit area, away from shag carpeting (where tiny parts can easily disappear) and keep a small tray handy to keep small parts from rolling away.

Remove the differential cover and rear axle -- Remove the (4) screws securing the differential cover as shown at left. Carefully lift out the rear axle as shown at right. Be sure to keep all small parts in a tray that will keep them from rolling away!

Remove the driveshaft ... and behold the hidden cab screw! Carefully lift away the drive shaft. If the universal at left front end remains on the motor drive shaft, then remove that also. Set aside drive shaft and remove the cab screw shown in second photo. Take a deep breath ... everything gets easier on the following pages!
