The Center for Mind/Body Healing Arts is a holistic, integrative, single nurse practice, since 1997. I am a member of the National Association of Independent Nurses, and am listed as an independent practitioner with ChicagoHealers in the Alternative section. I am also listed with the AHNA and Yogafamily. See links below.
ABOUT ME
I am licensed by the State of Illinois as a Registered Nurse (RN) and received certification, Holistic Nurse Certified (HNC), from the American Holistic Nurses Association (AHNA). Holistic nursing, like pediatric nursing, emergency room, or psychiatric nursing is recognized by the State of Illinois, and when certification in a nursing specialty is achieved, it is considered to be nursing at a more advanced and specialized level of nursing. The holistic nursing specialization is recognized by the American Nurses Association (ANA) as a subspecialty of nursing practice. As a holistic nurse, I provide traditional health education, health counseling as well as holistic health services (also known as Complimentary or Alternative Health). As a traditional nurse, I have worked with babies, children, teens, adults and seniors, in Chicago area hospitals, nursing homes, home health and hospice settings. My holistic practice of nursing is primarily educational and can be integrative and complimentary to medical treatment. It is not intended to replace medical treatment or diagnose illness. It is intended to be supportive, healing and nurturing, and focused on wellness and illness prevention.
I have a BA in behavioral sciences from the University of Illinois, and have worked with psychiatric patients. I'm a registered yoga teacher having completed a 2-year program, including advanced training. I have taught yoga at Chicago area health and medical centers, universities and for the Chicago area park districts. I have completed basic and advanced training in leading Mind/Body Skills Classes and have been formally trained in the various intuitive and energy modalities listed below. I have provided holistic services to numerous individuals. My scientific interest in holistic nursing and medicine continues to expand as I combine traditional nursing knowledge with complimentary and holistic nursing techniques within a caring practice based on "state of the art" holistic nursing theory. I am associated with the International Association for Human Caring, and have been a conference presenter there as well as a guest lecturer at various other places, including Governors State University, the Chicago Police Department, Little Company of Mary Hospital, and Seklycia Seniors. I have organized and led retreats and programs for Southwest Women Working Together and Alanon.

This certification is approved for holistic nurses by the AHNA. I have also completed training in the teaching of prenatal and couples yoga with Janice Clarfield of Urban Yoga in Vancouver, B.C. Canada. The modalities that I use to help and alleviate stress and promote wellness and relaxation include but are not limited to:
YOGA CLASSES FOR INDIVIDUALS OR GROUPS
Introductory, beginning and special yoga classes are provided for those who want to experience the healthful benefits of yoga. Yoga increases immunity to illness by increasing life energy (prana) and balancing the chakras. Yoga improves respiration, circulation, digestion, elimination, spinal, muscular and bone strength and flexibility. It facilitates inner peace and overall well-being, as it decreases aging, stress and fatigue.
Introductory classes expose the first-time student to yoga with simple yoga postures called asanas that are easy to learn and start to promote health and reduce stress right away. Breathing (pranayama) and simple breath meditation is introduced.
Beginning yoga classes are for those who have already been exposed to yoga, and would like to develop their yoga practice. Lessons include asanas at the beginners' level, with emphasis on greater inner focus, relaxation, flexibility, and strength. Accomodation is made for individuals who may have difficulty with flexibility and/or strength. A deeper teaching of yoga is introduced, including the 8 limbs of yoga.
Stress Reduction and Relaxation yoga classes focus specifically on the needs of individuals who are feeling stressed and are unable to relax. Asanas and yogic practices are used to specifically reduce stress and promote deep levels of relaxation and restoration, including yogic philosophy, meditation, breathwork, chanting and visualization. Special emphasis is placed on the use of Savasana as a stress-reducing and healing modality.
Prenatal and Couples Specialized yoga classes prepare the mother-to-be for birthing and emphasize deeper connection to both baby and spouse or partner. Spiritual, emotional, social and as well as physical concerns are addressed to help support the prenatal period and labor.
Special yoga classes are tailored around the specific needs of students who would like to have special needs addressed. Special needs may include but are not limited to children, elderly, womens' concerns such as pms, menopause, the events of pre and post pregnancy, concerns of persons with special conditions such as arthritis, obesity, and injuries. The special adjustments made in these classes do not replace therapeutic modalities such as physical therapy or therapeutic yoga, but rather allow a student to learn and practice yoga at a slower pace and within a specific needs based class. Breathwork, imagery and visualization, music, meditation, and energy based healing methods are integrated into the yoga classes to assist in pain management, increased breath capacity, and specal adjustment considerations for those who may have limited flexibilty, obesity, pregnancy, or age and disability related issues.
MIND/BODY SKILLS EDUCATION FOR INDIVIDUALS OR GROUPS
Mind/Body Skills are health enhancing, therapeutic, supportive coping skills that enable individuals to positively cope with their own chronic disease states, or life-threatening illness, caregivers who are experiencing stress in caring for a loved one who is elderly, chronically ill or dying, or those who are already healthy but would like to learn how to stay healthy, increase self-awareness and enhance their well-being.
The program consists of 12 lessons, 2 hours each, that are designed to facilitate health education and awareness based on the latest reseach in the area of mind/body medicine, (psychoneuroimmunology).
Mind/body skills are techniques that use:
Yoga, Breathwork, and Meditation
Imagery and Visualization
Self-Healing and Energywork
Autogenic Training and Biofeedback
Art and Music
Cognitive Coping Skills
Dance, Movement and Exercise
Noetics
Laughter and Humor
Participants who have completed the 12 week program find that their self-regulation skills help them to cope better, decrease stress, improve interpersonal relationships, heighten well-being and interest in life, decrease depression and anxiety, develop new perceptions of illness and/or their condition, and decrease symptom intensity and frequency of occurence.
Participants are provided with supplies and assignments that are to be practiced between classes in order to build on the sessions and facilitate skill building and create a transcendant life skills learning experience. Additional learning support occurs when mind/body skills are taught within a group setting, but can be taught on an individual basis as well.
ENERGY HEALING
Energy Healing Modalities are specific, non-invasive techniques involving the use of the hands to stimulate and increase the natural life energy channels, centers and bio-fields, (also known as chi, ki, prana, chakras and aura), and are accomplished by the person sitting, standing, or laying, and can last from 15 minutes to over an hour. There is lilttle or no contact with the body and the person remains clothed. The non-invasive, minimally touching, caring, soothing quality used in these therapies are specially suited for the relearning of appropriate touch by both the victims of physical/sexual abuse, as well as those who were the abusers/perpetraters and who are also in need of healing especially on the spriritual level, and those who are in severe pain, or have been traumatized and cannot tolerate touching, or touching pressure.
The subtle bio-field energy is connected with the chemical-electro-magnetic biological activity of all plants, animals and human beings, and can be observed with special equipment, showing increased size of the bio-field after application of bio -energetic interventions. Subtle bio-fields interact constantly with all life forms, and are also thought to exist on quantum levels. Recent research throughout the world, has shown that there are definite measurable differences in levels of urinary and salivary cortisol, immune cell activity, neurotransmitters, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, and temperature, as well as many other objectively testable markers that indicate positive self-healing health changes after energy therapy, at the cellular and systemic level.
Research studies have also shown improved bone and accelerated wound healing, reduction of pain, swelling and redness, increased relaxation response, reduction of stress and anxiety, and a general, improved sense of well-being, and can be used as preparation before and after surgery, or medical procedures, or can be used for optimal wellness as well as support for the dying process. The bio-energetic interventions traditionally have universal spiritual components that are found in healing practices throughout the world. The following energy therapies are used in my respectful, caring, healing practice of holistic nursing:
* THERAPEUTIC TOUCH
* HEALING TOUCH
* QUANTUM TOUCH
* BIOMAGNETIC TOUCH HEALING
* THAI NEURONAL HEALING
Please feel free to contact me for research references, or any informational questions that you may have. I will be happy to assist you.
