The Center City Opera Theater was founded in 1999, and was orginally known as the Opera Theater of Philadelphia. Its mission is to present the highest quality operatic and musical theater performances of both well-known and less familiar works in the more intimate theatrical spaces in the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The company places its highest emphasis on beautiful singing and dramatic storytelling, utilizing eloquent, sophisticated and simple design techniques. Its artistic teams fashion theatrical productions that engage audiences of all ages and experience. The company is dedicated to making critically important performance opportunities available to the current generation of opera and theatrical performers, designers, and directors, whose academic and student training programs are past. The Opera Theater is also actively involved in educational outreach throughout the community.
Since its inception, the Opera Theater has produced a half dozen operas to critical acclaim. All were fully staged new productions, using an orchestra contracted from the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia.

EDUCATION & the CENTER CITY OPERA THEATER
The Center City Opera Theater has a deep-rooted commitment to education. Our in-school arts education initiative OPERAtunities & Education works with students and teachers in the tri-county area, providing educational materials, classroom visits by CCOT staff and artists, special performances, and discounted tickets to dress rehearsal and regular evening shows.
Our Young Artist Program selects advanced students and recent graduates to perform
on the Opera Theater of Philadelphia stage. Some also participate in the company's educational outreach programs and perform special programs in area schools.
Our Resident Artist Apprentice Program selects, by audition, talented local singers at the very beginning of their careers to cover and understudy the season's major roles. Some participate in the company's educational outreach programs and perform special programs in area schools.
The Center City Opera Theater also sponsors an internship program, working with theater and music students Temple University, Community College of Philadelphia, and other higher education institutions in the Philadelphia area.
