Buckroe Beach
Buckroe Beach
Ahhhh, tiny little Buckroe Beach. I always considered this small, but fully equipped seaside park Oceanview's little kid brother. Many times I would fantasize that the Skyrocket would be moved over to Hampton to this little park by the sea,by the sea. Oh, how happy we would be!!!!
But fantasies usually don't come true..well,I take that back. A lot of mine have came true, but unfortunately, not that one.
The first time I saw Buckroe Beach, a friend & I had been enjoying some,uh,well let's just say what we were enjoying made my eyes red & was the color of this text.
Night had fallen as we drove up on this diminutive pleasure spot, the park didn't come into view until we were right at the park, then,POW! Lights! millions of them!! The park was lit up in all its' glory. But then so were we...
I was only able to ride "The Dips" three times that night. But I'll never forget it. What a wonderful ride it was. I returned many times to enjoy the park under more normal conditions.
So if you're in a normal condtition ,or even if your not, return with me to visit"the kid brother" ...Buckroe Beach.

(above) Buckroe's Balls...of the decorative persuation. If you're in the area today, you'll still find some of them used as decoration around the beach.
(above) This is the view you first saw as you drove up to the park. No matter that it was a small the coaster,I still got a thrill at it's first sight.
(above) Many years ago,Buckroe also had a side-friction figure 8 coaster on this side of the Dip's lift hill. Later, the circle swings(Silver Jets) would be here. The first time I went into the park, the jets had been removed from the cables &  were setting on the ground like a furniture-store display of futuristic sofas.Sad...
(above) Unfortunately,by the time I was visiting Buckroe Beach, the train wasn't operating, nor was the Jets that are in the background of this post card view. But 'ya had to give the park credit. It hung on for all it was worth!
(above) This father & his kids were a joy to watch & ride with.He TRULY loved his children& enjoyed riding with them to the hilt. Watching & talking with them made me feel good for several days.
(above) This post card view shows a earlier version of the park's Roll o Plane. In later years, they switched to a more modern version that had tapered vs.rounded planes. As a matter of fact,Indiana Beach had a pamphlet that used a photo of Buckroe's Roll o Plane.
(above) One last picture,a loney empty Cascades hill awaits a re-filling of water that was not to be.
Soon there was no BuckroeBeach Amusement Park. There were no bad tv movies made to help in it's demise. Buckroe did have a "last day" of sorts. By that time,The Dips wasn't even running. Rumors were that the Dips would be moved, but not so.The carousel was saved. It's now across the street from the science museum in Hampton. There are remains at Buckroe. If you know where to look, where the Cascades once stood are a few cables sticking out of the ground& the small lighthouse that was in the park is still there. The site is mainly just another empty lot, actually getting more people attending now than when the amusement park was there. Sad,huh?...For other links to Oceanview & The Dips, click on the word  index.
