PACK 1226 PINEWOOD DERBY RULES

Participation

Open to all registered Pack 1226 Cub Scouts, siblings, and parents/significant others. You must be present to race. Rules will be enforced to ensure fair competition. READ THE RULES CAREFULLY!

Inspection

Cars will be inspected during registration for compliance to the rules. Cars that fail to meet the specifications set out below will be disqualified. Cars will be impounded after they are inspected, and repairs will be limited to replacement of axles/wheels that are broken/lost during the races.

Specifications:

BODY: The body in the Official BSA Pinewood Derby Kit distributed at the December Pack meeting must be used. Bodies of other kits/materials will be grounds for disqualification. The body may be shaped, hollowed out, or built up from the original block, as long as it meets all other specifications. Any additions to the original body, i.e. steering wheels, drivers, decals, paint, weights, etc., must be firmly attached. There is no designated front or back to the supplied body, so either end may be the front.

WIDTH: The width of the car’s body at the wheels may not be modified; it must be the same as the original kit. With the wheels added, the width must not exceed 2 3/4".

LENGTH: Overall length (including wheels that extend past the body) may not exceed 7".

WHEELBASE: Wheelbase may be modified, as long as wheels do not cause overall car length to exceed 7". The minimum clearance under the car is 3/8"; else the car may drag on the track’s guide strip.

WHEELS: Wheels and axles must be as furnished in the official kit. NO washers, bushings, oil lubricants, bearings or springs are allowed. Wheels may be sanded to remove only the flashing. Wheels may be polished. NO reductions in width (.275”) or diameter (1.150” to 1.200”), changes in shape or wheel covers are allowed. Axles from the kit may be filed and polished. Graphite powder lubricants are allowed. Regular oils and silicone sprays will not be allowed as they may soften the plastic wheels. No graphite power will be allowed in the building.

WEIGHT: The weight of the race-ready car must not exceed five (5.000) ounces as measured on the official scales. Weights should not be placed on the bottom of car (will drag on track’s center bar).  The addition of other materials are allowed but must be firmly affixed to the car. The official scale will be made available prior to race day.  An announcement of when and where will be provided at least one-week ahead.

OTHER: Cars must free-wheel with no stored energy or movable weights. Cars with wet paint or wet glue are not allowed. The Official Race Team may attach a car number to the car using a small adhesive baked label. The location of this number will be on the upper rear portion of the car so the Official starter can easily identify the correct car and its proper direction of travel.

SPORTSMANSHIP

Ungentlemanly or unsportsmanlike conduct by any participant or member of the audience will be grounds for expulsion from the competition and/or race area. Any protest of a car’s classification can be filed at with the Race Chairperson prior to the competition.

PARENTAL INVOLVMENT

The spirit of the derby is that the scouts are to be building the cars with parental supervision.  While it may be necessary for a parent to operate a power tool such as a band saw or drill, it is expected that the scout build the car.  Any gross infractions of this rule where it is determined that the parent essentially built the car for the scout may be grounds for disqualification.

 RULE INTERPRETATION

Pack 1226’s Pinewood Derby Chairman is the final authority for rules.

 AWARD CATEGORIES

SCOUTS: 1st thru 3rd place – by Den ranks for Tiger, Wolf, Bear, Webelos 1, Webelos 2, and overall.

SIBLINGS: 1st thru 3rd place for brothers and sisters of Pack 1226 scouts.

PARENTS/SIGNIFICANT OTHERS: 1ST through 3rd place for parents/significant others (uncles/aunts/grandparents/neighbors/etc.) of Pack 1226 scouts.

“MOST” CATEGORIES: There will be awards for most creative, most colorful, most patriotic, and/or others as determined. Only Cub Scout entries will be considered for these categories. Specific categories will be communicated at least one week prior to the derby.

 COMPETITION

The plan is to have double elimination brackets or other system allowing for multiple races to be run for each car the winners in each den and that the winners for each den will compete for the overall pack trophy.  This is subject to change.  However, an update will be provided at least one week prior to the race.

The scouts participating will be expected to keep up with their own cars and that they show up for their heats.

In case of a tie, the cars will be re-run.

If a car (or part of a car) leaves its land and interferes with another car, the heat will be re-run. If the same car causes interference again, the car will be disqualified from that heat.

The owner of a car suffering mechanical problems will be given the opportunity to repair the car and will be reinspected.

THE RACE COMMITTEE RESERVES THE RIGHT TO AMEND THESE RULES AS NECESSARY WITH PROPER NOTIFICATION
