Our son's progress with Autism

Before we began any interventions or therapies with our son, it was difficult to get his attention. As shown in the picture on the left Christmas 2001 my son was not attentive to what was going on around him. I had to hold him on my lap and try to get him interested in opening gifts. That was not easy and I was lucky to hold him for only a few minutes because he was all over the place. I had to open his gifts for him and he had very little interest in what was going on no matter what was inside the package.

The signs of hope;

After only 6 weeks of being on the dietary intervention we began to see our first sign of recovery for our son when he started repeating the letters of the alphabet song that was in a Sesame Street program on TV in the living room. If I can make a copy of that day to UTube I'll upload it. It was the most exciting day I remember of seeing a change.
It was an exciting time; week by week I noticed subtle awareness, verbal progress and things he was doing. With early intervention in addition to biomedical we were able to bring more interest to the world around him.
The photo on the right is one of my most adored photo's (after being on biomedical, early intervention and preschool for 2 years.) My son was happy to get dressed up in a costume, this was the first real time he was even slightly interested in dressing up. This was his big day in an alphabet parade at school for the Kindergarten class. He was the letter "J" for Jesus. The letters were randomly picked by each child out of a hat and Davey picked "J". That was a blessed day for sure!

The Recent Blessings:
|
|
|
|
Five years have passed and Davey is doing so well. He still has some quarks but he is very verbal (not quite conversational but will answer limited questions appropriately and at times likes to point out and say something about things he sees. He plays appropriately with toys and has a good imagination and his pretend play is doing great!)
Davey was on stage for the first time in his life on November 3rd 2007 (which happened to fall on his birthday!) He sang songs with his third grade class for over 45 minutes! He even impressed my Mother-In-Law; which isn't easy to do!
(I'll try to get a photo of him on stage, I had a video camera but the colors from the video were drowned out from the backlighting, I didn't know I had pressed the backlight button to bring in more light!)

On the right is a photo of Davey (at his present age of 9) sitting on Santa's lap. This was at our recent Group Family Christmas Party (ASGC, Autism Society of Greater Cleveland and AutismNE).
Davey had such a good time and we allowed him to have some of the foods that are not gfcf. It took a few days but he recovered. He still has biomedical reactions to gluten and casein such as excessive sweating, rosey cheeks, hyper bahaviors, more stemming etc. We are still working on healing the immune system I'm taking his recovery in stride. For us, I think it's important to take it at a pace that allows for natural healing as much as possible. (This is now that I'm not desperate as I was when we were first starting out. I remember the 24 hour stress so well. When my son is not on biomedical for a few days I get a good glimps of what it used to be like as he becomes very irritable, short tempered and constantly noisey both verbally and physically with stomping or slamming things around.) I've thanked God many times for what I've learned about gut issues, immune system, dietary, vitamin and mineral supplementations and sensory integration, these interventions work well for my son.

Davey continues to grow developmentally and on the next webpage I have a picture of his latest writing. I was so pleased at his writing that I scanned it in for everyone to see. Click on the link below to see the next webpage.
