| Lee Newman of Vancouver, B.C. continues his leadership in geophagine husbandry with a recent spawning report about this variety - an immediate mouthbrooding form more closely resembling Satanoperca leucosticta than S. jurupari. Read his complete account here. Other immediate mouthbrooders are: S. jurupari, S. cf. jurupari from French Guyana , S. pappaterra. | ||

Copyright © 2003 Eelke van der Zwaag These Satanoperca (the two upper fish!) are from a recent importation to the Netherlands, and are being maintained by Eelke van der Zwaag. They are certainly similar to those above. Eelke reports that these fish are immediate mouthbrooders, based on five spawns. Especially notable is the near identicality of the bright scales behind the midline of the eye. The density of spotting, the pattern on the caudal fin and the spread of the red coloration is consistent with the Newman colony as well. The intensity of the red is different, but that expression is dependent on the fishes' diet. Another potential difference is the depth of the head, but this may related to age and or size. The similarity in breeding behavior and appearance despite the temporal separation between these collections certainly supports the concept that this form is a distinct population, perhaps a species, and not a sport. |
