Buchler Family History

Generation #1
Frederick & Elizabeth Buchler

No actual records have been found yet for Frederick or Elizabeth.  The family does not know when they were born, when or where they got married, or when they died.  The family maintains that Frederick Buchler married Elizabeth Fuller and that they were both born in Germany.  They had three children, William, Augustus, and Frederick Julius.  I cannot say for sure whether Frederick & Elizabeth Buchler were born and married in Pennsylvania or Germany, but it is clear that all three of their children were born in Pennsylvania.
Generation #2
The Buchler Brothers
William Buchler was born about 1886, in Pennsylvania.  He married Frances in about 1908, presumably in Pennsylvania.  Family members say he had three sons, William, Christopher, and Thomas.  There is evidence of two daughters as well, Naomi, born about 1908, and Frances, born about 1910.  The three sons were not living with the family during the 1930 census, which is the only record we have of the family so far.  The 1930 Census, lists the family resideing at 6813 Oakley St, Philadelphia, PA. William Buchler was age 44.  He was married when he was 21 years old, and his occupation looks to be an asserters in some kind of factory.  He lists himself and his father born in PA, his mother in Germany.  He owned the family home, which was valued at $8000.  They had a radio set. Frances Buchler, wife, age 43.  She was also married at 21 years of age.  Frances lists herself and her mother from PA, her father from Germany.  Naomi Buchler, daughter, age 22. Frances Buchler, daughter, age 20. She worked as a stenographer in a cotton mill.

Augustus Buchler was born sometime before February 1887, presumably in Pennsylvania.  His birth has been estimated by the fact that the family maintains that he is older than his brother Frederick Julius, who we know to be born in Dec 1887.  The family says he went by the name Gus, and that is all the information we have.
Frederick Julius Buchler was born on December 11th, 1887, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  His home address listed on his birth certificate is 2417 Mascher Street, Philadelphia.  From here on we will call Frederick Julius just Fred to distinguish him from his father. The birth certificate lists his parents as being Joseph & Mrs. Biehler, and that his father was a weaver by trade.  This contradicts the family’s name of Frederick as Fred’s father.  The change from Biehler to Bucher is not unexpected; Buchler has been mangled into Biehler, Buechler, Bihler, Beekler and many other variations in the old record archives.  I cannot prove if Fred’s father was named Frederick or Joseph, because so far no records exist.  Just one month later Fred Buchler was baptized.  His baptismal certificate reads as follows:

St. Bonifare Church 174 Diamond Street, Phila 22 PA.
Frederick Julius Bichler, son of Frederick Bichler and Elizabeth Fillers.
Preformed by the Rev. Joseph A. Kantz on January 29th, 1888.
Copy of certificate dated Aug 14th, 1950.

This conflicts with his birth certificate and collaborates the family’s version. Once again, it is no great leap to change Buchler to Bichler, or Fuller to Fillers on an official record.  The best guess is that the family is correct, and Fred’s parents were Frederick Buchler and Elizabeth Fuller, however it cannot be proven.
Fred Buchler married Anna M. Frish about 1909 in Philadelphia, PA. Anna M. Frish was born about 1885 in Pennsylvania. Fred Buchler, age 23, Married one year, able to read and write.  Employed as an ironworker at a factory.  Home was rented.  No children born. Frederick lists himself and his father as being born in Pennsylvania, his mother was born in Germany.
Fred Buchler married Anna M. Frish about 1909 in Philadelphia, PA. Anna M. Frish was born about 1885 in Pennsylvania. In the 1910 Phildelphia Census Fred Buchler was married one year. He was employed as an ironworker at a factory.  Their home was rented.  No children born. Frederick lists himself and his father as being born in Pennsylvania, his mother was born in Germany.  Annie Buchler listed herself and both her parents as being born in Pennsylvania. Fred and Annie Buchler had five daughters; Mary Elizabeth on July 25th, 1910, Frances Jane on August 14th, 1911, Margaret Lorraine on March 4th, 1913, Sophie Marie on June 22nd, 1916, and Anna M. in September of 1919.
Sometime before 1920 Fred and Annie moved their family to 114 Robbins Avenue in Rockledge, PA.  According to the family, Fred and his two brothers all had homes purchased for them by a wealthy Aunt. This Aunt was probably Mary A. Harrigan who was married to Cornelius Harrigan. We know from the family that this was Fred’s Aunt, we are just not sure if her maiden name was Buchler or Fuller. Mary was born on March 3rd, 1856 and died on May 18th, 1924. Her husband, Cornelius Harrigan was born on April 17th, 1851 and died on February 28th, 1911.  The Harrigans were in fact wealthy, having owned a hosiery mill in Philadelphia that made silk stockings.  They had no children of their own, which makes Mary helping her nephews all the more reasonable. The Harrigans were married about 1875.
In March of 1920 Fred’s youngest daughter, Anna M. Buchler, died as an infant.  Her cause of death is not known.  She was buried on March 6th, 1920 at Lawnview Cemetery, Wyncote #1, Lot 100, Grave #4, in Rockledge PA.  Just two years later Fred’s wife, Annie Buchler, died in April 1922 of kidney failure, she was about 37 years old.  She was buried at Lawnview Cemetery, Wyncote #1, Lott 100, Grave #3 in Rockledge PA, on April 15th, 1922.
On May 26th, 1924 Fred Buchler married Marian May Gilder Hockenbury in Philadelphia, PA.  It is not known how they met.  Marian was born on May 15th, 1901 in Philadelphia, PA.  Marian was only 9 years older than Fred’s oldest daughter Mary, and she was 14 years younger than Fred.  This made life difficult for Marian, who also came into the household with her 4-year-old son Edward Hockenbury.  More information about Marian May Gilder Hockenbury Buchler can be found in the Gilder Family History.  Fred and Marian had one child, Marian May Buchler, who was born January, 1925.  Sadly, Marian’s son Edward died of spinal meningitis on March 24th or 27th 1927, at 1:35 AM.  Edward was 7 years old. He is buried with the Buchler family at Lawnview Cemetery, Wyncote #1, Lot 100, and Grave #4, in Rockledge, PA.
Fred Buchler worked at the King Kid leather shop in Philadelphia Pa, where he was a leather tanner.  In the Depression, he had a job as a chauffeur for a wealthy woman who suffered from face cancer and always had to wear a black veil.  He got the job because he was the only one who did not react to her appearance.  Fred also worked as a baker and a plumber at some point in his life.Fred Buchler died at Einstein Memorial Hospital on March 29th, 1961.  His cause of death was a stroke, and he had Parkinson’s disease. His funeral was held on April 1st, 1961 at  J.W. Dean & Son Funeral Home, Foxchase, PA. The funeral was presided over by Rev. Kluas G.W. Molzahn, the Pastor of St. Timothy’s Lutheran Church in Rockledge. He is interred at Lawnview Cemetery, Wyncote #1, Lott 100, Grave #2, in Rockledge PA.  Marian lived for several decades after her husbands death.
