Generation #2
Peter John Winter
Peter John Winter was born in Philadelphia, PA, presumably during Jacob & Eva’s visit to Jacob Rorch/Rirch. His date of birth is in question. According to the family, Peter was born on April 30th, 1906. However, the 1930 Federal Census, the Social Security Index, and ship manifest records indicate that he was actually born on May 1st, 1906. Sometime after his birth, the Winter family returned to Ketful. Peter returned again to America by himself on board the S.S. President Harding, which sailed from Bremen, Germany on July 7th, 1924 and arrived in the Port of New York on July 16th, 1924. Because he was a U.S. Citizen, and not an immigrant, he was not required to fill out most of the ship’s manifest, but he did list himself as 18 years old, born on May 1st, 1906, single, and gives his home address as 1510? Bodein Street, Philadelphia, PA. Peter does appear on the 1930 Federal Census as follows:
United States Federal Census, April 6th & 7th, 1930.
Philadelphia County, Enumeration District 51-553, Sheet 5B,
Ward 17, Block 53.
Address: 441 W. Thompson Street, Philadelphia, PA.
Peter J. Winter, age 23, single. Lived there as a lodger.
Worked as a carpenter on building construction, able to read
and write. Born in Pennsylvania, listed his Parents as being
born in Romania.
Peter most likely met Rose Apfl shortly after he arrived in Philadelphia when he worked as a maintenance man at the Briarhust (Breyer-Hurst?) Hotel in Philadelphia, which happened to be located across the street from the Stanley Court Apartments where Rose lived and her father worked as the maintenance man. Peter married Rose November 3rd, 1934 and had the following six children:
Anna Eva Winter, born August, 1935.
Theresa Winter, born August, 1936.
Jacob Peter Winter, born March , 1941.
Peter John Winter Jr., born December, 1942.
Frederick William Winter, born April, 1950.
Rosemarie Winter, born May, 1951.
Peter was a carpenter who constructed bridges and roadways, and also helped build the Doylestown Court House in Bucks County, PA. During WWII he worked for Baldwin Locomotives. Peter John Winter died on March 22nd, 1972, and is buried with his wife at the Forrest Hills Cemetery in Philadelphia.
I am still working on verifying that Nikolaus Winter is the other son of Jakob & Eva. I know he was married and had a daughter in 1933. His nickname was Klos. He worked as a butcher in Deutsch sankt Peter, and used to go into Ketfel to buy livestock for butchering.
I do not know the name of Jacob & Eva's daughter, but she did marry a man with the last name of Priesach. They had two sons, the younger of which was named Nikolaus. Nikolaus Priesach was a prisoner of war in 1946, held at P.G.A.Depot 402 in Thoree/Sarthe. He wrote a letter to his Uncle Peter Winter in America while he was captive. The letter tells us that his older brother Priesach was missing in the war, and that his mother, Mrs. Winter Priesach, died on November 22nd.1945. Nikolaus also mentions his Uncle Nick. At the time of his letter, his father was still living.
